JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team will join the American Cancer Society's Suits and Sneakers Weekend on Saturday, when the Gamecocks look continue their winning ways against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at 4:30 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Gamecocks welcome the Cougars, the Ohio Valley Conference's newest member to The Pete for the first time and will be looking for a little revenge from a tough 66-61 loss in Edwardsville, Ill., on Jan. 31. JSU is also looking to continue its recent success and will be shooting for its first three-game winning streak since the 2009-10 season.
This weekend, JSU head coach James Green and his staff will team up with head and assistant basketball coaches across the U.S. and will swap their loafers for sneakers during the 9th annual Coaches vs. Cancer Suits & Sneakers weekend, an effort to bring awareness to the American Cancer Society's vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays.
Both high school and college basketball coaches will lace up their sneakers to spotlight the fact that cancer remains a major health concern and everyone can take daily steps to reduce their risk of the disease. Wearing sneakers is much more than a fashion statement; it's visual reminder from the coaches that prevention is key when it comes to blocking cancer before it takes center court in our lives.
Coaches vs. Cancer is a collaborative initiative of the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), empowering coaches, their teams and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer.
Since 1993 the initiative has raised more than $75 million dollars to fund groundbreaking research, provide up-to-date cancer literacy, advocate for public health policies and deliver services to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

JSU is riding a two-game winning streak, including an impressive 63-45 win over Eastern Illinois on Saturday, one that saw four players score in double figures, including Brian Williams' 18 points and Nick Cook's double-double of 12 points and 10 boards. Dion Waiters bested his career high in rebounds by seven with season-high 12 in the win.
The Cougars have dropped four in a row and five of their last six since edging JSU to end the 2011 calendar year. Senior Mark Yelovich leads them with 13.5 points per game.
