JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team's struggles continued Saturday afternoon with a 67-57 loss to Tennessee State in Ohio Valley Conference action at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The 10-point setback was the eighth-straight for the Gamecocks, who fell to 3-14 on the season and 0-4 in OVC contests. The Lady Tigers of TSU improved to 6-10 overall and 2-2 in the OVC. The eight-game losing skid is the longest in JSU's NCAA Division I tenure and the longest since Jax State lost the final ten games of the 1984-85 campaign.
The difference in the loss was a 19-8 scoring run by the Lady Tigers over the last 5:51 of the opening half. The Gamecocks held their final lead of the contest at 19-18 after a jumper by
Destiny Lane. From that basket on, TSU took the lead and pushed it out to a 37-27 lead at halftime. TSU connected on 15-of-31 from the field to aid in the ten-point advantage at intermission. The Lady Tigers also took advantage 16 JSU turnovers and turned them into 16 points on the offensive end in the first half. Jax State finished the contest with 29 miscues.
The Gamecocks opened the second half on a scoring spurt as they trimmed the ten-point deficit by out-scoring TSU 9-2 in the first two minutes of the final half. JSU trailed 39-36 after a made basket by senior
Brittany Manning. That was as close as the Red and White would get to the Lady Tigers as the visitors from Nashville, Tenn. pushed the lead back out to double digits and the largest lead of the contest at 49-36 after a 10-0 run that spanned over three minutes. Jax State would make one more run at the Lady Tigers and get within two possessions at 58-54 at the 3:16 mark. Both teams struggled in the second half from the field as they combined to hit 18 shots.
For the second consecutive game and the sixth time this season, junior
Danielle Vaughn recorded a double-double. The Huntsville, Ala.-native finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Vaughn was not the only Gamecock to register a double-double as freshman
Briana Morrow turned in a double figures in scoring and rebounding. Playing against her hometown team, Morrow pulled down a season-high 16 rebounds and scored 14 points. She connected on 5-of-11 from the field and 4-of-7 from the free throw line. Freshman
Candace Morton nearly became the third Gamecock to finish the game with a double-double. The Lexington, Ky.-product tallied ten rebounds and eight points. The trio led JSU to a 58-40 edge on the boards.
Lane added eight points and nine rebounds in the setback, while Manning finished with seven points.
TSU was led by a trio of double digit scorers with Tayla Foster carding a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Alana Morris added 12 points while Jasmin Shuler pitched in 11 points in the road win.
JSU will host Morehead State in a Monday matinee on Jan. 9 at 3 p.m. The tip off time was switched from 7 p.m. to 3 p.m. to avoid conflicts with Monday's BCS National Championship game. Admission is free for Monday's contest at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
