Gamecock Tennis Sweeps Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Jacksonville State swept Alabama State, 7-0, in men's and women's tennis on Friday at the Orean Black Underwood Tennis Complex in the capital city of Alabama.

After dropping the first two matches of the season, the Jax State men have turned in back-to-back wins in consecutive days over in-state foes to move to 2-2 on the season.  The Gamecocks ousted former Gulf South Conference rival North Alabama at home on Thursday for their first win of the season.  The Gamecock women also pushed their season's record to 2-2.

JSU's men tuned in a dominating performance as the line up turned in 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 3 through 6 in singles.  Freshmen Jordan Cowling, Felipe Diaz along with Felipie Watanabe swept their opposition.  At the top half of the line up, Axel Sundberg downed ASU's Bobby Brand, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1, while Igor Santos topped Lex Pierre, 6-4, 6-0 at the second position.  Nenad Marcec completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Stefan Vojnic.

In doubles, Jax State made quick work of the Hornets as it claimed all three doubles spots.  Santos and Cowling moved to 3-1 on the season in doubles with an 8-0 win over ASU's tandem of Jonathan Freeman and Kenneth Haley.  Diaz and Felipe Wenzel ousted Roddrick Ivory and Vojnic, 8-1.  Sundberg and Marcec turned in an 8-4 win over ASU's Pierre and Brand.

In the women's match, the Gamecocks were equally impressive as ASU won just two games throughout the entire match. JSU picked up two early points as ASU defaulted at No. 5 and 6.  Raphaela Lima and Zoe Izinos won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and 4.  Raisa Guasti tallied a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1, while Rafaela Wenzel carded a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2.

The Jax State men return home on Saturday, Feb. 11 as they host future Ohio Valley Conference member Belmont.  Match time is set for Noon at the JSU Tennis Complex.  JSU's women will make a return trip to Montgomery, Ala. on Feb. 17 to take on Auburn-Montgomery.
