Senior Destiny Lane Leads JSU In Home Finale Loss To UT Martin

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE – Senior guard Destiny Lane closed out her Jacksonville State career on Saturday with a team-high 14 points in JSU's 87-52 loss to UT Martin on Saturday in the season finale for the Gamecocks.

Jax State wraps up the season at 4-25 on the season and 1-15 in Ohio Valley Conference play.  The Skyhawks of UTM put a cap on a 15-1 OVC finish to win the regular season title and secure the top seed in next week's OVC Tournament in Nashville.

The Skyhawks, who drained 16 three-pointers in the first meeting of the year in Martin, matched that number again on Saturday as they finished the contest at 16-of-29 (55 percent) from behind the arc.

JSU got off to a quick start by taking its largest lead of contest after posting the first six points before UTM got on the board at the 17:36 mark of the opening half with its first of a plethora of treys on the evening.  UTM took its first lead of the game at 8-6 with 14 minutes left in the half and never trailed the rest of the way.  The Skyhawks pushed the lead out to double digits at 24-11 on a three-pointer by Heather Butler.  Butler, UTM's leading scorer at 23.5 points per game, exceeded her average with a game-high 29 points.  She filled the net with 7-of-10 three-pointers in 27 minutes of action.

UTM's lead swelled to 22 points right before the halftime intermission on a Butler trey.  After JSU trimmed the deficit down to nine points on Lane's lone trey with 4:42 left in the first 20 minutes, the Gamecocks went cold as they were out-scored the rest of the half, 19-6 as UTM took a 47-25 lead after one half.

UTM extended the lead out to 46 points at 75-29 after opening the second half just as hot as it closed the first half.  The Skyhawks started the half on a 28-5 run to seal the road win on the final day of the regular season.

Lane finished her Jax State career ranked in the program's all-time scoring list and among the all-time leaders in rebounding and minutes played.  The Ashville, Ala.-product  completed her stint with 27 double figure games.  JSU's other senior, Brittany Manning, concluded her three seasons on the JSU campus with four points in her final game in a Gamecock uniform.  The Huntsville, Ala.-native finished strong as she scored in double figures in six of the last nine games of the season.

Freshman guard Candace Morton scored 14 points off the bench, while Briana Morrow added 12 points.  Morrow, a candidate for OVC Freshman of the Year honors, tallied 15 games in double figure scoring and led the Red and White with five rebounds.  Danielle Vaughn, who had 25 points against UTM in the first affair, was limited to a season-low two points, but was credited with a career-high five blocks.
