Skyhawks Cruise to Win Over Gamecocks

Box Score MARTIN, Tenn. –  Junior Danielle Vaughn scored 23 second half points but it wasn't enough as Jacksonville State fell 99-67 to UT Martin on Monday evening at Skyhawk Arena.

Vaughn, who was limited to just one basket in the first half, knocked down 12-of-14 from the field to finish with 25 points, one point away from matching her career high of 26 points. The Huntsville, Ala.-post player was one rebound shy of her tenth double-double of the season as she pulled down nine rebounds.  She was a perfect 11-of-11 from the field in the second half to spark Jax State's 19-of-29 second half production.

The Gamecocks needed that kind of performance in the first half as UTM raced out to a 22-2 lead thanks to a scorching shooting mark from behind the three-point mark.  The Skyhawks, who finished 16-of-40 from behind the arc, connected on 9-of-22 in the first half.  The 16 treys made by UTM was the most given up by Jax State in conference play and matched Samford's 16 against the Red and White earlier this season.  UTM entered the Monday night affair as one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the OVC and averaged 9.3 treys per game.

The Skyhawks also took advantage of 18 Gamecock turnovers in the second half to build a sizable double digit lead.  UTM turned the JSU miscues into 24 points on the opposite end.  UTM raced out its largest lead of 33 points on multiple occasions late in the half and would take a 53-20 lead into halftime.  For the game, UTM hit 34-of-77 from the field for 44 percent and were productive at the free throw line after a 15-of-18 performance.

Coming out of the dressing room, Vaughn sparked a JSU 21-6 scoring run and sliced the 33-point lead down to 18 points at 59-41 at the 14:38 mark of the second half.  After being limited to just 20 points in the first half, JSU turned in 47 points in the final 20 minutes and actually out-scored UTM by one.  The Gamecocks limited their turnovers in the second half as they had just four of their 22 in the half.

Senior Destiny Lane also had a strong second half as well with ten of her 15 points in the second half.  The Ashville, Ala.-native was credited with a career-high seven assists in 37 minutes of activity.  Senior Brittany Manning reached double figures in the scoring column for the third straight game with ten points.  Freshman Briana Morrow was the fourth Gamecock to post double digits with ten points as well.

The Gamecocks will be off until next Monday, Feb. 13, as they travel to Morehead, Ky. to face the Eagles of Morehead State.  Tip off is set for 5 p.m. CST.
