WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Jacksonville State baseball team's struggles continued on Friday as JSU fell 11-5 to Bradley in the second day of the Matt Russ Central Florida Games at the Land O' Lakes Complex.
The Gamecocks dropped to 2-13 on the season and have lost six straight. The Braves of Bradley improved to 10-5-1 on the year.
The Braves overcame an early 1-0 deficit with five runs combined in the second and third at bats, thanks to the home run ball. After Jax State posted a run in the first frame, BU's Max Murphy posted his first of two straight extra base hits in consecutive plate appearances with a lead off double. BU's Murphy drilled the Braves' second home run of the night in the top of the third to extend the lead out to 5-1 with a two-run shot to left. After an Austin Jarvis single sandwiched between a pair of outs, JSU looked poise to get out of the inning before Murphy connected on the home run.
The two squads traded runs in the fifth inning as BU plated a run on Greg Partyka's two-bagger to push the lead to 6-1. JSU had a golden opportunity to slice into the lead after loading the bases, but were unable to get one run after BU pitcher Justin Ziegler got a double play ball.
Scott Underwood scored on the play after leading off the inning with a single to the left side.
The Braves opened the contest up in the seventh with another three-run inning. The big hit in the inning came from Jarvis with a double down the right field line to score two of the three runs. Jarvis scored on a single off the bat of Derek Sprout.
Jax State's final three runs came by way of
Ben Waldrip's sixth home run of the season with a blast to right field to trim the deficit to 9-5 .
Coty Blanchard reached base after a BU miscue and
Sam Eberle singled to left before Waldrip's home run.
BU added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth.
Watts suffered the loss after throwing the first six innings. He allowed six runs on six his along with striking out seven,
Chase Smith and
Thomas Darrah tossed the final three innings combined. As a pitching staff, JSU posted 12 strike outs.
