EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Jacksonville State's tennis teams completed a weekend sweep on Sunday with a pair of wins over SIU Edwardsville. The Gamecock men turned in their fourth consecutive win, while the JSU women have won back-to-back conference wins.
The JSU men turned back the Cougars 5-2 for the fifth win in a row and moved to 7-9 overall and 3-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play. On the women's side, Jax State claimed a 4-3 win over the SIUE women to improve to 2-3 against OVC competition.
In the men's match, JSU swept all three doubles matches to gain the early advantage.
Axel Sundberg and
Nenad Marcec, Jax State's top doubles pairing, downed SIUE's duo of Marten Jonsson and Jacob Tanulanond, 8-4. The win pushed the tandem's overall mark to 9-6 and 3-1 in the OVC. At No. 2,
Igor Santos and
Jordan Cowling teamed up against Morten Christensen and Dylan Reed and made quick work of the SIUE pairing, 8-1.
Felipe Watanabe and
Felipe Wenzel earned a 9-7 win at No. 3.
Santos, Marcec, Cowling and Watanabe each won their respective singles matches in straight sets to lead JSU to the win. Santos remained unbeaten in OVC play with his fourth-straight win and moved his individual record to 12-3 on the year, with all 12 wins coming at the two-spot. Marcec won his tenth consecutive match with a 7-5, 7-5 win over SIUE's Christensen at No. 3. Cowling, playing at No. 4, ousted Devan Faulkenberg, 6-2, 6-1. Watanabe battled Tanulanond at No.5 and tallied a 7-5 first-set win before blanking his opponent, 6-0 in the second set.
In the women's duel, JSU was jumpstarted by the doubles point after winning all three matches.
Raisa Guasti and
Raphaela Lima blanked SIUE's team of Carli Connors and Laura Horning, 8-0.
Rafaela Wenzel and
Zoe Bizinos topped Kali Donner and Amanda Miller, 8-3 at No. 2. Alexsandra Cmilijic and
Kelly Tomlin claimed an 8-5 win over Haley Ilcewicz and Rachel Webb.
Guasti carried Jax State's momentum in to singles play with a straight-sets win over Connors, 6-3, 7-5. Wenzel gained a point at No. 3 after disposing Webb, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3.
Zoe Bizinos turned in a three-set thriller at No. 4 to key the Gamecocks' win. After splitting the first two sets with Ilcewicz, Bizinos claimed the win after securing a 6-1 third-set win.
Both JSU squads return to action on Tuesday, March 28, as they host Shorter College. The match will be played in Anniston, Ala. at the Anniston Country Club. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m. After travelling to Kennesaw, Ga. on Friday, March 30, Jax State returns to OVC play on April 1 against Southeast Missouri.
