REPLAY OF SELECTION SHOW
JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's golf team will continue its championship season in State College, Penn., in the East Regional, the Gamecocks learned during Monday's NCAA Championship Selection Show.
After leading from wire-to-wire to win the Ohio Valley Conference championship last week, the Gamecocks will be sent to Penn State University's Blue Course for the 54-hole regional from May 10-12. They will be one of 24 teams in the regional field, one of three sites in the 72-team Championship. The top eight teams and two individuals will advance to the NCAA National Championship in Franklin, Tenn., from May 22-25.
In their first NCAA appearance in four years, JSU will be paired in the East Regional with seven other conference champions and 16 at large teams. Alabama is the top team at the site that also features Chattanooga, which is coached by former Gamecock Colette Murray.
Led by senior
Lucia Fernandez Valdes, who is making her first NCAA appearance in a four-year career that has seen her earn all-conference honors in each year. The Cordoba, Argentina, native's career scoring average of 75.41 is the lowest in school history.
JSU led the OVC tournament from the first hole to the last, winning the eventat the Greystone Golf Course in Dickson, Tenn., by 13 shots over preseason favorite Morehead State. Junior
Ornella Arrizon claimed the individual title with a 54-hole score of 222. Sophomore
Lourdes Lopez Caballo finished fourth, while Fernandez Valdes tied for sixth.
