JACKSONVILLE – Fans can catch the Jacksonville State men's basketball team on Thursday, when they host Austin Peay at Pete Mathews Coliseum at 7 p.m. Fans 18 and under get in free to all JSU home games.
The Gamecocks continue their four-game homestand against an Austin Peay team that is also looking to get on track in conference play. JSU is trying to snap a two-game skid after losses to Tennessee State and Eastern Kentucky last week, while the Governors have lost three in a row and 11 of their last 12.
JSU's four league losses have been to the top three teams in the OVC's East Division, one that has shown dominance over the West Division so far this season. After last week's games, the East is 16-3 in head-to-head games with teams in the West, and four East teams are undefeated against the other Division. The Gamecocks are 3-0 against teams from the West, with all three wins coming on the road.
JSU dropped the first game of its homestand on Saturday to Eastern Kentucky despite the Gamecocks' first double-double of the season from senior
Tarvin Gaines. The West Memphis, Ark., native scored 17 points and pulled in 11 rebounds to lead the Gamecocks, but the Colonels blistered the nets to the tune of a .511 shooting percentage to grab the win. Fellow senior
Ronnie Boggs almost joined Gaines in the double-double category with 11 points and nine rebounds. JSU also got a season-high 10 points from junior
Rico Sanders off of the bench.
On the year, Gaines is averaging 13.9 points per outing, but his scoring in league play is a team-best 16.0 points per game.
Peay is led by junior guard Travis Betran, who is averaging 17.5 points per game on the year. His game has stepped up in league play, where he is scoring 21.3 points per night, third-most of any player in the OVC.
