JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team will host free Halloween festivities at Pete Mathews Coliseum on Thursday, just before the Gamecocks take on West Georgia in their first exhibition game of the 2013-14 season.
Several JSU student-athletes, the JSU Cheerleaders and Cocky will host a community Trick-or-Treat event that is sponsored by Walmart. That event will begin at 5 p.m., with the basketball game against UWG tipping off at 6:45 p.m. Admission is free to each event. Also, there will be a Halloween costume contest at halftime of the game.
The Gamecocks take to the floor for the first time, hosting an old foe from the Division II Gulf South Conference days in West Georgia at Pete Mathews Coliseum. The two meet in exhibition play for the ninth-straight season after meeting 49 times when JSU was in Division II. JSU holds a 37-12 advantage and a 22-5 advantage at home over the Wolves, one that jumps to 30-5 counting the exhibition contests.
Thursday is the first time fans can get a glimpse of the 2013-14 JSU Men's basketball team, who is coming off of its first back-to-back seasons with a .500 conference record in its Div. I history. The Gamecocks tied for their second-best Div. I season with a 17-11 record a year ago and posted an 8-8 record in Ohio Valley Conference play.
Back is Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference pick Brian Williams, who averaged 13.1 points and 4.3 assists per game a year ago. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native enters his senior season with 942 career points and 267 assists and has started each of the Gamecocks' last 71 games.
He is joined in the backcourt by junior guard Darion Rackley, who averaged 13.7 points per game in a 2012-13 season that forced him to miss some time with a hand injury. The St. Louis, Mo., native was one of the most accurate 3-point shooters in the OVC a year ago, when he connected on over 39 percent of his attempts.
The Wolves are led by senior forward Sean Boston, who averaged 11.2 points and 7.0 rebounds per game a year ago. They also get Lavon Gray and Ryan Godfrey back, who missed last season due to injury. Both averaged over eight points per game in 2011-12.
The game will be broadcast live on the JSU Sports Network with Mike Parris calling the play-by-play.
