JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team will wrap up its exhibition schedule on Monday, when it hosts Martin Methodist at 7 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Admission is free.
The Gamecocks host NAIA foe Martin Methodist in its final exhibition tune up before starting the 2013-14 season on Friday. The Gamecocks are looking to build on a 65-52 win over West Georgia on Thursday that saw them hold the Wolves to just 32 percent shooting from the floor. In the meantime, junior Darion Rackley was scoring 15 points and junior Jamal Hunter grabbing a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards.
Hunter was 4-for-6 from the floor and Rackley 4-for-9, leading a JSU attack that built an early 25-point lead in controlling the game from wire-to-wire. Hunter also blocked a game-high three shots in his debut in a Gamecock uniform after transferring from East Mississippi Community College after last season. Rackley added four steals and went a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
The Redhawks have played once this season, a 55-54 win at Oakwood on Thursday. MMC got 13 points and 12 rebounds from Reginald Porter in the win, while John Taylor pitched in 12 points.
The Gamecocks and Redhawks had never met on the hardwood before last season, when JSU claimed a 79-64 win in the series debut on Dec. 11. Rackley went 6-for-10 from 3-point range in the game en route to scoring 27 points. Senior Brian Williams scored nine points and dished nine assists for the Gamecocks in that win.
JSU will use this final exhibition to fine tune its preparations for Friday's season opener at Bradley in Peoria, Ill. The game will be part of a three-game road trip to start the season that will also pit JSU against Illinois on Sunday and Chicago State on Tuesday. All games will be on the JSU Sports Network.
