JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team will start a home-heavy stretch on Tuesday, when the Gamecocks host Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi State at 6 p.m. at University Field.
The Gamecocks (13-9) will play eight of their next nine games in the friendly confines of University Field, beginning with their 11th meeting with the Bulldogs (16-6, 1-2 SEC). It will be the second time MSU has visited University Field, adding to a 3-2 Bulldog win in 2001. MSU leads the all-time series, 7-3.
The Gamecocks have turned it on of late by winning 11 of their last 14, a stretch that has seen their lone losses come at the hands of Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and Arkansas. JSU split a pair of games with the Razorbacks in the Woo Pig Classic in Fayetteville, Ark., in early March.
The Gamecocks have been solid in the circle, posting a staff earned run average of 2.80 on the year. Over the last 14 games, JSU pitchers hold a 2.26 ERA, led by senior Hilary Phillips' 1.33 and 3-0 record in four starts. Junior Tiffany Harbin has a team-best seven wins and is 6-2 with 11 appearances in the past 14 games. Harbin has also struck out a team-best 105 batters to run her career total to 548, passing Carly Kellam for second in school history.
The JSU offense has also picked up after getting off to a 2-6 start this season. The Gamecocks are batting .300 during its recent run. Led by sophomore Savannah Sloan's .444 (20-for-45) average during the past 14 games. Sloan leads the Gamecocks on the season with a .381 mark, one of three players above the .300 mark.
Junior Kalee Tabor, a transfer from Seminole State College, has provided much of JSU's power so far in 2013 with seven of the team's 17 home runs. Senior Krystal Ruth has eight doubles to lead an offense that has totaled 45 so far this season, 22 more than any other team in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Mississippi State dropped two in a three-game home series with LSU over the weekend, snapping a nine-game winning streak it took into the series. Junior Alison Owen, a transfer from Georgia, has been impressive to start her MSU career. She holds a 9-3 record and a 1.10 ERA, while striking out 111 batters in just over 80 innings in the circle. The duo of Sam Lenahan and Logan Foulks has paced the Bulldogs at the plate, combining for 11 of the team's 18 home runs and 32 of its 84 RBI.
The game will start at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the JSU Radio Network with Mike Parris calling the action.
