JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis teams claimed the first of three home matches this weekend with a pair of 7-0 wins over in-state foe Alabama State at the JSU Tennis Courts on Friday.
The Gamecock men moved to 4-9 on the season and will take a two-match winning streak into their Ohio Valley Conference opener against Belmont on Saturday. The JSU women improved to 5-8 on the season. Jax State and OVC newcomer Belmont will take the courts at 10 a.m. on Saturday. JSU will close out the weekend on Sunday against Tennessee State. JSU blanked the Hornets earlier this season in Montgomery.
In the men's match, Jax State was dominant in doubles as it swept all three matches. The top tandem of
Axel Sundberg and
Nenad Marcec ousted ASU's team of Bobby Brand and Julian Cseszko, 8-2. The Gamecocks' No. 2 team of
Igor Santos and
Felipe Wenzel won by the identical score over Lex Pierre and Jarred Thompson. JSU's pairing of
Felipe Diaz and
Felipe Watanabe quick-worked ASU's Roderick Williams and Stefan Vojnic, 8-1.
In singles, JSU won in straight sets at all six courts, led by
Axel Sundberg's fourth consecutive win in singles. Sundberg moved to 6-1 at the No. 2 spot with a 7-5, 6-3 over Pierre.
Igor Santos turned in his second-straight win at No. 1 after topping ASU's Brand. Sophomore
Felipe Wenzel carded his third-straight win with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Williams. Sophomore
Felipe Diaz posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Williams at No. 5. Senior
Felipe Watanabe and sophomore
Felipe Diaz closed out the scoring for the Gamecocks with a pair of 6-4, 6-4 wins at No. 6 and No. 5.
The JSU women cruised in their match with the Hornets. In doubles, the Gamecocks locked up the point by winning at No. 2 and 3.
Zoe Bizinos and
Olivia Nguyen ousted Arantxia Wijnaarde and Katia Kraus, 8-2 at No. 2. Head coach
Steve Bailey inserted the tandem of
Taylor Lefton and
Isidora Knezevic in to the line up at No. 3 doubles and the pairing registered their second win together with an 8-2 victory over ASU's Mechelle Barton and Brianna Fairley.
Raisa Guasti and Alexsandra Cmilijic topped Pauline Denis and Melissa Telfer, 8-5.
JSU's dominance continued in singles with a complete sweep at all six matches. The bottom part of the line up was impressive with losing just three games combined at No. 4, 5 and 6. Sophomore
Danielle Kerindi won the opening set 6-1 before her opponent, Kraus retired in the second set. Senior
Kelly Tomlin blanked Fairley, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. Knezevic moved to 2-2 on the season with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6.
Guasti, Nguyen, who moved up to No. 2 in the line up, and Bizinos posted wins in the contest.
The Jax State and Belmont contest will get started at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the JSU Tennis Courts.
