JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis team's opened Ohio Valley Conference play with solid wins over Belmont on Saturday at the JSU Tennis Courts.
The JSU men topped the Bruins, 5-2, while the Gamecock women blanked their new league counterparts, 7-0.
Steve Bailey's men's squad won its third consecutive match and improved to 5-9 on the season. The JSU women pushed their season's mark to 6-8 overall.
In the men's match, Jax State started strong by claiming the doubles point. JSU's No. 1 doubles tandem of
Axel Sundberg and
Nenad Marcec downed BU's team of Renato Antun and Fernando Mussolini, 8-5. JSU won the point after its pairing of
Igor Santos and
Felipe Wenzel ousted Henrique Norbiato and Navarro Veys, 8-3.
JSU carried the momentum in to singles by winning four of the six matches. Santos, Marcec picked up their second win of the day after winning in straight sets over their respective foe. Santos moved to 7-7 on the year after taking down BU's Antum – 6-2, 7-5. Marcec closed out the match with a three-set affair at No. 3. He out-lasted Mussolini 6-2, 6-3, 10-6.
Felipe Diaz and
Felipe Watanabe turned in points at No. 4 and 6 singles. Diaz bested Bruno Silva – 6-3, 6-2. Watanabe registered a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Henrik Claesson.
The JSU women posted their second consecutive blanking after turning back Alabama State on Friday. In a mirror image of the men's match, Jax State took the doubles point after carding wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles. The duo of
Raisa Guasti and
Raphaela Lima cruised past BU's pairing of Carolyn Caire and Sandra Kancheva, 8-3. The Gamecocks' pairing of
Zoe Bizinos and
Olivia Nguyen moved to 7-5 on the season with an 8-2 win over Catherine Holliday and Natalia Nunes.
Guasti, Lima, Nguyen and
Kelly Tomlin tallied straight-sets wins in singles to clinch the match. Guasti took down Holliday at No. 1 – 6-1, 6-2. Lima posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nikki Maciel at No. 2. Nguyen turned in her seventh win of the season after topping Fabiana Mersan, 6-4, 6-4. Tomlin recorded a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Kancheva.
Zoe Bizinos and
Danielle Kerindi completed the sweep with three-sets victories. Bizinos split her first two sets with Caire before claiming the win after a 10-6 super tie-breaker set. Kerindi won her first set 6-2 over Nunes, but lost the second set 7-6. She rebounded to claim the super tie-breaker, 10-6.
JSU closes out the opening weekend of conference play on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match with Tennessee State at the JSU Tennis Courts.
