MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis teams rebounded after dropping their first Ohio Valley Conference match on Friday to Eastern Kentucky with a pair of wins over Morehead State on Saturday.
The Jax State men edged the Eagles, 4-3, while the Gamecock women ousted the MSU women, 6-1. JSU moved to 3-1 in OVC play on the men's side. The women's squad pushed its OVC mark to 4-1.
In the men's match, the Gamecocks got off to a solid start by winning all three doubles matches. JSU's top-tandem of Axel Sundberg and Nenad Marcec bounced MSU's Ji Hoon Heo and Nick Mercer, 8-3. Jax State's No. 2 pairing of Igor Santos and Felipe Wenzel made quick work of the Eagle's team of David Clifford and Enrique Samudio, 8-1. Felipe Watanabe and Felipe Diaz out-lasted MSU's duo of Hugo Almonte and Nathan Martin, 8-7.
Jax State was tested in singles play as Santos and Sundberg went to a third-and-deciding match to aid in the victory. Santos dropped his opening set to Heo, 6-2, but rebounded with wins in straight sets – 6-2, 6-3. Sundberg's match with Martin mirrored Santo's battle with Heo. Sundberg lost the opening set 6-2, but regrouped to down Martin – 6-1, 7-5. Watanabe rounded out the JSU scoring with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Almonte at No. 6.
The JSU women started strong with the doubles point. The Gamecock team of Raisa Guasti and Raphaela Lima had no trouble with MSU's pairing of Victoria Cran and Dominique McLean, 8-1. The sophomore duo of Zoe Bizinos and Danielle Kerindi turned back Morgan Wright and Pacheco Brousseau, 8-3.
In singles play, Guasti, Bizinos and Kerindi finished the day with wins at their respective courts. Guasti split her first two sets with Cran before claiming a 10-7 super tie breaker win. Bizinos topped Brousseau – 6-2, 6-3. Kerindi posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over McLean at No. 3. Senior Kelly Tomlin and Aleksandra Cmilijic won in straight sets at No. 5 and 6.
The JSU women return to OVC play on April 4 with a trip to Nashville, Tenn. To face the Skyhawks of UT Martin. The match with be contested at Centennial Park in Nashville. The men's team will travel to Tennessee Tech on April 3.
