
JSU Tennis Sweeps Murray State

MURRAY, Ky. – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis teams started the final weekend of conference play and improved its standing in the Ohio Valley Conference standings with a pair of wins over Murray State on Saturday.
The Jax State women moved into third place in the league standings after a pivotal 4-3 win over the Racers. JSU snapped MSU's seven-match winning streak with the win as it moved to 7-2 in the OVC. A win over Austin Peay on Sunday would give the Gamecocks second place and a first round bye in next weekend's OVC Tennis Championships in Paducah, Ky.
JSU's men moved to 6-2 in the OVC and 10-12 overall after topping the Racers 5-2. The Gamecocks also hold the third spot in the seeding process heading into the final day of the regular season.
The JSU and APSU match will get underway at 10 a.m. on the APSU campus.
In the women's match, Jax State took the early advantage by winning the doubles point. JSU's top tandem of Raisa Guasti and Raphaela Lima ousted MSU's team of Ashley Canty and Carolyn Huerth, 8-3. At No. 3, Zoe Bizinos and Danielle Kerindi won by the identical score over Erin Patton and Suzaan Stoltz.
The Racers bounced back in singles play with three wins and knot the match at 3-all. Guasti and Bizinos continued their stellar play with wins at No. 1 and No. 4. Senior Kelly Tomlin aided in the team points with a win at No. 6. Guasti, who won her third consecutive OVC match, moved to 7-2 in the conference with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Canty. Bizinos turned in her eighth OVC win after dispensing of Patton, 7-5, 6-2. Tomlin moved to 6-2 in league matches after a 6-3, 7-5 win Stoltz.
In the men's match, Jax State swept all three doubles matches to gain the lead. The JSU pairing of Axel Sundberg and Nenad Marcec turned back Ryan Kennedy and Adam Taylor, 8-3. Igor Santos and Felipe Wenzel won their sixth OVC match together and have run off four consecutive wins. Felipe Diaz and Felipe Watanabe closed out doubles with an 8-7 win over Nik Mitric and Aleks Mitric.
Santos improved to 8-1 in singles after MSU's Joao Camara retired in the second set. Santos waon the opening set, 6-0 and was leading 3-0 when Camara retired. Marcec won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 over Tyler Jefferies. Felipe Wenzel topped Nik Mitric 6-1, 6-2 at No.5, while Felipe Watanabe rounded out the scoring at No. 6 with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Aleks Mitric.
