2013 OVC Tennis Championship Bracket

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Jacksonville State women's tennis team secured an opening-round bye in the upcoming 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Tennis Championship as JSU blanked Austin Peay, 7-0, on Sunday.

The Gamecock men will also advance to the post season event and will play in the opening round on Friday after falling to the Govs, 5-2.

The JSU women, by virtue of their win over Murray State on Saturday, will face the winner of the Belmont and Murray State next Saturday in Paducah, Ky. at 10 a.m.  The Red and White posted a final OVC mark of 8-2 to finish second in the league.  The men will face Belmont on Friday at 2 p.m. after earning the No. 4 seed.

It was a dominating performance by the women's squad, which began in doubles play by claiming the doubles point.  The No. 1 tandem of Raisa Guasti and Raphaela Lima quick-worked APSU's team of Ornella Di Salvo and Andra Cornea, 8-3.  At No. 3, JSU's pairing of Zoe Bizinos and Danielle Kerindi won by the identical margin over Jovana Karac and Mary Theresa Kubek.
In singles, the Gamecocks swept all six courts in straight sets, including senior Kelly Tomlin's 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 over Julie Covington.  Kerindi also needed little time at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Karac.  Guasti moved to 8-2 in the OVC and won her fourth consecutive match with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Alison Carre.  Lima was opposite of Di Salvo in singles and posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 2.

Freshman Olivia Nguyen carded a 6-1, 6-4 win at No 4 over Cornea.  Bizinos moved to a sparkling 9-1 in OVC play with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Vanessa Tavares.  It marked her sixth consecutive win and her eighth in the last ten.

The JSU men got off to a great start by winning the doubles point, but could not withstand the Govs charge in singles.  Jax State won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to post the first point of the match.  The Gamecock duo of Igor Santos and Felipe Wenzel topped John Storie and Aleksas Tverijonas, 9-7.  The JSU duo completed the league slate with a 7-1 mark.  Felipe Diaz and Felipe Watanabe turned back APSU's team of Dimitar Ristovski and Evan Borowski, 9-7.

Watanabe also turned in JSU's lone singles point at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Borowski.  Santos finished the OVC season with a 7-2 mark after falling to Sean Bailey of APSU.  Nenad Marcec dropped a tough three-set match to Ristovski at No. 3.  After splitting the first two sets, Ristovski clinched the match with a 6-0 third-set win.
