PADUCAH, Ky. – The Jacksonville State women's tennis team fell to Eastern Kentucky in the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Women's Tennis Championship finals, 4-0, on Sunday at the Heflin Tennis Center.
The Gamecocks, who finished second in the OVC, wrapped up the 2013 campaign with a 15-11 overall mark. With the win, EKU swept both the regular season and tournament titles and earned the league's automatic bind to the NCAA Championships.
The Colonels took the early lead by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The JSU duo of
Raisa Guasti and
Raphaela Lima dropped an 8-3 decision to EKU's pairing of Kristina Labeja and Mellissa Gerritsen at No. 1. The point was clinched after Saioa Oscoz and Milena Poffo topped Jax State's tandem of
Olivia Nguyen and Aleksandra Cmilijic, 8-2.
The Gamecocks battled the Colonels in singles before falling in straight sets at No. 2, 4 and 5. Lima, playing her final match as a Gamecock fell to Labeja at No. 2 – 6-4, 6-1. EKU went up 3-0 and looking to seal the match after Gerritson posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over JSU's
Zoe Bizinos.
EKU tallied the championship point at No. 5 as Poffo turned back
Danielle Kerindi, 6-4, 6-4.
Guasti, playing the OVC Player of the Year in Amandine Faouzi at No. 1, took the first set from Faouzi and dropped the second set before the match was called. It was the first set that Faouzi had dropped against OVC competition.
