Gamecocks Drop OVC Tournament Opener 11-2 to EKU

JACKSON, Tenn. – Brent Cobb pitched eight solid innings and Eastern Kentucky hit three home runs to claim an 11-2 win over Jacksonville State in the opening game of the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Championship.
Cobb (7-6) scattered nine hits and had four strikeouts to earn his seventh win of the season for EKU, while Casey Antley (6-5) gave up six runs in 4 1/3 innings to suffer the loss for the Gamecocks.
The Colonels (21-32) took the lead in the third inning after Sean Hagen hit a three-run home run over the left field wall to give EKU a 3-0 advantage.
Eastern Kentucky added two more runs in the fourth after Kyle Nowlin drove in both runs with a single to centerfield, and Austin Grisham added an RBI grounder in the fifth to give the Colonels a 6-0 lead.
Jax State (32-25) scored both of its runs in the fifth inning after four straight hits to lead off the inning. Eddie Mora-Loera doubled down the left field line and Andrew Bishop followed with a single through the right side to put runners on the corner.
Gavin Golsan then singled to right center to score Mora-Loera and Stephen Bartlett followed with a single through the left side to score Bishop and cut the lead to 6-2.
Eastern added a run in the seventh after Bryan Soloman led off with a solo home run, and then added four insurance runs in the ninth, highlighted by a three-run home run by Kenny Hostrander for the final margin.
Mora-Loera led the Gamecocks with three hits and Bartlett finished with two more hits, while Golsan and Bartlett each added an RBI.
Nowlin, Soloman and Hostrander each finished with three hits to lead Eastern Kentucky, who finished with 18 hits in the game.
Jacksonville State will now play at 11 a.m. on Thursday and will face Belmont. The game can be heard on the Gamecock Sports Network, beginning at 10:45 a.m.
