Gamecocks Season Ends with 6-3 Loss to Belmont

JACKSON, Tenn. – Chase Brookshire had a career-high 14 strikeouts and tossed a complete game to lead No. 3 Belmont to a 6-3 win over No. 4 Jacksonville State in an elimination game at the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Tournament.
 
Belmont (38-20) will advance to Friday's elimination game, while Jacksonville State ends the season at 32-26, marking the ninth time in the last 10 years the Gamecocks posted 30 or more wins.
 
Brookshire (5-2) issued just one walk to go along with his 14 strikeouts, while allowing only five hits to pick up his fifth win of the season. It was the most strikeouts in an OVC Tournament game since 2001.Taylor Shields (8-3) gave up seven hits and five runs in three innings on the mound to suffer his first lost since March 16.
 
The Bruins scored first after Judah Akers led off the second inning with a single and came in to score on Spencer Petett's RBI single up the middle for a 1-0 lead.
 
Belmont added three more runs in the third inning after Matt Beaty, Josh Davis and Alec Diamond each drove in a run as the Bruins built a 4-0 lead. Diamond finished the game with four hits to lead the Bruins at the plate.
 
Jax State after Griff Gordon led off with a triple and scored on Coty Blanchard's infield grounder to cut the lead to 4-1, but Belmont plated two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Beaty's drove in two runs for a 6-1 lead.
 
The Gamecocks scored in the fifth after Andrew Bishop scored on a Cal Lambert's sacrifice fly, and then scored their final run in the sixth on Gordon's solo home run to right field for the final margin.
 
Gordon, who finished with three hits, was just a double away from hitting for the cycle for the Gamecocks, while Eddie Mora-Loera extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the second inning.
