BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Jacksonville State's Jeremy Watson has been named the Ohio Valley Conference's Newcomer of the Week for the second straight week, the league office announced on Monday.
Â
A 6-foot-7 forward from Birmingham that transferred to JSU from Shelton State Community College, Watson notched his second double-double in as many games and his fourth of the season on Sunday to lift the Gamecocks (6-4) to a 79-67 win over Dartmouth at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Â
He extended his streak of consecutive games with at least 10 points and eight rebounds to seven with 19 points and 11 boards in the win. JSU is 6-1 in that stretch, one that has seen Watson average 15.3 points and 11.4 rebounds per game.
Â
Also with a big week for the Gamecocks was senior Darion Rackley, who etched his name in an elite group on Sunday. The guard from St. Louis scored 22 points to lead JSU in the win over the Big Green and move him past the 1,000 Points mark in his career.
Â
Rackley now has 1,007 career points, making him the 23rd member of the 1,000 Points Club at JSU and just the sixth Gamecock to reach the milestone at the Division I level.
Â
Watson, Rackley and the Gamecocks will wrap up an eight-game stretch in the state of Alabama on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against UNC Asheville at Pete Mathews Coliseum. It will be the sixth home game in JSU's last eight and the final one before the close of the 2014 calendar year. Admission is free to JSU students and all fans ages 18 and under.
