MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a sweep of Alabama State, while the JSU women notched a win over ASU on the first day of three matches in the capital city.
Jax State moved to 1-3 on the season with the 7-0 win, while the Gamecock women evened their season's mark to 2-2 after posting a 6-1 win over the Hornets.
In the men's match, JSU won all three tightly-contested doubles matches to gain the doubles point. The top tandem of
Pedro Wagner and
Jefferson Wendler-Filho turned back ASU's team of Dylan Cleary and Jarred Thompson, 8-4. At No. 2,
Jaryd Reese and
Felipe Wenzel edged Adam Coyne and Ronald Mataba, 8-7. JSU closed out the doubles sweep after
Dylan Gee and
Mathias Chaim downed ASU's pairing of Digvijay Naruka and Takura Mlamb, 8-6.
In singles, the Gamecocks maintained the momentum from sweeping doubles to post wins at all six singles. Wagner picked up his first win as a Gamecock after disposing of Cleary in three sets. After Cleary won the opening set – 6-4, Wagner bounced back to win the next two sets – 6-3, 7-5. Reese also had a three-set battle at the No. 2 spot with ASU's Mataba. Reese mirrored what Wagner did at No. 1 as he lost the first set, but turned it around to win in straight sets – 7-5, 6-4. Wenzel and Mlamb went the distance as Mlamb won the first set 6-2 but could not withstand Wenzel's comeback to fall 6-2, 7-5.
Wendler-Filho, Gee and Chaim won in straight sets at No. 3, 4 and 5 respectively. The wins by Wendler-Filho and Chaim were their first in a JSU uniform.
In the women's match, Jax State won the doubles point after winning all three matches. The No. 1 tandem of
Raisa Guasti and
Olivia Nguyen turned in an 8-6 win over ASU's Arantxia Wijngaarde and Nathalie Lorenco. JSU's
Claudia Marsala and Alexsandra Cmiljic made quick work of Pauline Denis and Melissa Telfer at No. 2, 8-2.
Danielle Kerindi and
Zoe Bizinos closed out doubles with an 8-6 victory at No. 3 over Brankica Orlovic and Irina Cvijovic.
Freshman
Sadey St. Amant needed little time to discard Brianna Fairley at No. 6 – 6-0, 6-1. Guasti's duel with ASU's Wijngaarde went three sets before Guasti coming out on top in the third-and-deciding set. Guasti claimed the opening set – 6-1, before falling in the second set – 6-3. Guasti won the match with a 10-5 third-set win.
Marsala ousted Telfer at No. 3, while Nguyen and Bizinos carded wins at No. 2 and 5 respectively. ASU's lone point came after Cvijovic edged Kerindi – 6-4, 6-4.
