CONWAY, S.C. – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team extended its winning streak to five straight matches with a solid 4-3 decision over Coastal Carolina on Friday to wrap up its spring break trip to the Palmetto State.
JSU, who downed The Citadel, 6-1, on Thursday, moved to 11-6 overall and has now won eight out of its last ten matches. CCU fell to 9-6 on the season.
The Gamecocks dealt with the Chanticleers and the weather as inclement weather surrounded the area throughout the day. The two squads played the singles portion of the match first to beat the rain. The doubles section of the match was moved to the end of the match to see if it was needed to be played. The doubles matches were needed as it stood 3-3 after singles were complete.
CCU took an early lead in the match by winning at No. 1 and No. 2. Nationally-ranked Philipp Tsangaridis topped JSU's
Pedro Wagner, 6-2, 6-1 for the first point. Garik Yedigarian downed
Jaryd Reese of Jax State, 6-4, 6-2. JSU picked up its first point of the match after

Gee has now won eight out of his last ten matches. CCU added its third point of the day and moved closer to clinching the match after Hunter Whalen turned back JSU's
Felipe Diaz in three sets. After splitting the first two sets, Whalen out-lasted Diaz in a 7-6 tiebreaker.
The Gamecocks evened the match to force doubles play with wins at No. 4 and 5. Both matches went the distance as
Jefferson Wendler-Filho and
Mathias Chaim posted wins after falling in the first set at both spots. Wendler-Filho dropped the first set to CCU's Ted Nilsson 6-2 before bouncing back for the win, 7-5, 7-6. Chaim suffered a 6-3 opening-set loss to Jabor Al-Mutawa, but regrouped to post a 7-5, 6-3 victory.
In doubles, the CCU duo of Tsangaridis and Christofides turned back JSU's pairing of
Jaryd Reese and
Pedro Wagner, 8-2. Gee and Chaim, who were pivotal in singles, teamed up to edge Yedigarian and Renan Samed, 8-6. Jax State clinched the match after Wendler-Filho and
Felipe Wenzel took down Nilsson and Whalen by the identical score.
