JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis teams closed out the non-conference portion of the schedule with a pair of setbacks to in-state rival Troy on Wednesday afternoon at the JSU Tennis Courts.
The Gamecock men fell 4-0 to the Trojans, while the JSU women suffered a 4-1 loss to Troy. The loss snapped a five-match winning streak put together by Jax State along with falling to 11-7 on the season. JSU fell to 6-13 on the women's side and lost its sixth in a row. Both squads now turn their attention to the final Ohio Valley Conference stretch beginning this weekend in Nashville, Tenn.
In the men's match, the Trojans (7-14) took command of the match by claiming the doubles point after winning at No. 1 and 3. Troy clinched the point after its top duo of Sami Ghorbel and Pablo Moreno topped JSU's pairing of Jaryd Reese and Pedro Wagner, 8-3. Troy's team of Mansingh Athare and Tommy Cundy ousted JSU's duo of Jefferson Wendler-Filho and Felipe Wenzel, 8-1, at No. 3.
Troy notched the final three points to take the match at No. 1, 2 and 4 singles. Gabriel Sciacca Dias turned back JSU's Reese at No. 1 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. JSU freshman Dylan Gee, who entered the match on a hot streak, suffered his first loss in the last five matches. He was bumped up to the No. 2 slot to face Troy's Ghorbel and took the loss, 6-3, 6-3. Daniel Bustamante closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Mathias Chaim at No. 4. Wendler-Filho, Felipe Diaz and Wenzel were playing with momentum prior to the match being clinched.
In the women's match, Jax State grabbed a win at No. 2 doubles, but dropped the doubles point. The Gamecock duo of Zoe Bizinos and Olivia Nguyen quick-worked Troy's pairing of Margot De Hann and Monica Gonzalez, 8-2.
The lone JSU point came by way of default as Bizinos carded a walk over win against Brooke Durden at No. 6. Troy claimed its seventh match in row after winning on courts No. 1, 2 and 5. The Trojans' Trang Huynh downed JSU's Raisa Guasti at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1. Lyubov Dorofeeva turned back Claudia Marsala, 6-3, 6-3. Troy sealed the match after Gonzalez defeated Danielle Kerindi, 6-3, 6-1.
JSU will visit OVC foes Tennessee State and Belmont this weekend in Nashville. The Gamecocks and Tigers will get started at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Jax State and Belmont will square off on Sunday. The BU-JSU men's match will feature the top-two teams in the OVC as the Bruins enter the match with an unblemished 5-0 OVC mark. JSU begins the final OVC road trip at 4-1 in conference play.
