LIVE AUDIO: GAME 3JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team will wrap up its 2014 home schedule this weekend with a three-game series with Belmont beginning Saturday at University Field.
The Gamecocks (33-12, 17-4 Ohio Valley Conference) will host the Bruins (12-29, 6-14 OVC) in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday before concluding the series with a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday. Sunday will also be Senior Day, and JSU will honor its five seniors in a pregame ceremony on the field. Admission is free to all JSU students and fans ages 18 and under.
JSU looks to continue its recent success, having won seven in a row in league play to put itself in a tight race for the regular season title. With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Gamecocks are less than a game behind first-place Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. The regular season champion earns the right to host the conference tournament in two weeks.
The Gamecocks have been especially good in the circle, starting with senior
Tiffany Harbin. The Hazel Green, Ala., native has dropped her earned run average to 2.16 and has a 14-6 record on the year, thanks to a 10-2 mark and a 0.86 ERA in conference play. She was named the OVC Pitcher of the Week for the third time this year on Monday after a pair of shutouts and a save last week that extended her current scoreless innings streak against OVC hitters to 28.2 innings. Opposing hitters are batting just .181 against her, while league batters are hitting .161 with her in the circle.
Harbin is one of the five seniors that will play their final regular-season games at University Field this season. Fellow pitcher
Savanna Hennings, first baseman
Amanda Maldonado, third baseman
Kalee Tabor and center fielder
Hayden Crawford will also be honored prior to Sunday's series finale.
Junior
Sara Borders leads the Gamecock offense, one that is hitting .320 on the year and .325 in conference play. The Alexandria, Ala., native was named the league's Player of the Week on Monday for her efforts in JSU's 4-1 week last week, one that saw her homer twice, double five times and drive in nine runs. She currently leads the OVC in batting average (.464), slugging percentage (.862), on base percentage (.554), runs scored (41), hits (64), RBI (46), doubles (15), home runs (12) and total bases (119).
As a team, JSU leads the OVC in almost every offensive category, including the .320 batting average that is 39 points higher than anyone else and 49 home runs that are 20 more than the next team. The Gamecocks have scored 270 runs, 52 more than the closest OVC squad and good enough to rank them 26th nationally in scoring. Defensively, their .977 fielding percentage is the ninth-best in the country.
Borders is currently 10th nationally in batting average and ninth in on-base percentage. Harbin is tied for second in the nation with 10 shutouts, one shy of national leader Emily Weiman of North Carolina State's 11.
The Bruins are led by Kat Hollingsworth, who enters the weekend hitting .339 and is tied for the team lead with 22 RBI. Her three home runs are second to Jessica Wilson's five.
Taylor Moon anchors the Belmont pitching staff with a 2.77 earned run average, while holding opposing batters to a .251 average.
Saturday's games will be broadcast on the OVC Digital Network, while Sunday's game will be carried in an audio-only online broadcast.
