Men's Box ScoreWomen's Box ScoreNASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team moved into a tie for first place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings with two matches left after handing Belmont its first conference loss on Sunday with a 4-2 win over the Bruins.
The Gamecock women also wrapped up its weekend in the Music City with a 6-1 win over BU on Sunday to even its OVC mark at 4-4. The women's squad continued on to Paducah, Ky. after the win as they will play Southeast Missouri on Monday morning. The match was moved from Cape Girardeau, Mo. due to the threat of rain in the area. The JSU men now stand at 13-7 overall and 6-1 against the OVC. If the Gamecocks and Bruins finish with identical conference marks, JSU would be the top seed in the OVC Tournament in a few weeks, due to winning Sunday's crucial match.
In the men's match, Jax State got off to a good start by winning the doubles point. It marked the fifth time that it has claimed the doubles point in conference play. JSU's top pairing of
Pedro Wagner and
Jaryd Reese edged Belmont's team of Mauricio Antun and Marko Lovrinovic, 8-6. JSU cruised at No. 3 doubles as
Jefferson Wendler-Filho and
Felipe Wenzel blanked BU's Hans Nardelli and Martijn Verberne, 8-0.
The Gamecocks were dominant at the lower half of the line up as they clinched the match by winning at No. 4, 5 and 6. The win by
Felipe Diaz at No. 6 was by default. Wendler-Filho dispatched Nardelli in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Mathias Chaim topped Henrik Claesson, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5.
In the women's tilt, JSU swept the doubles point to gain the early lead. Senior
Raisa Guasti ousted BU's Sandra Kancheva in a quick, 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1. Sophomore
Olivia Nguyen turned back Laura Van Eeckhoudt, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2.
Claudia Marsala turned in a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 3, while
Danielle Kerindi and
Zoe Bizinos notched wins at No. 5 and 6. Belmont's lone point came at No. 5 as Nikki Maciel defeated
Isidora Knezevic, 6-1, 6-2.
The JSU men return home to close out the regular season with a pair of matches beginning on Wednesday. The men will take on Murray State in a re-scheduled match from earlier in the season at the JSU Tennis Courts at 12 p.m. Both squads will close out the regular season against Morehead State on Saturday at 11 a.m.
