OXFORD, Miss. – Jacksonville State's season came to a close after Georgia Tech scored three runs in the top of the ninth to post a 4-2 win over the Gamecocks in an elimination contest in the 2014 NCAA Oxford Regional on Sunday afternoon.
Jax State ends the season at 37-26 that included an impressive run through the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament to claim the conference title a week ago to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament field. The Yellow Jackets (37-26) move on to face the loser of the winners bracket contest between Washington and host-Ole Miss later on Sunday.
Matt Gonzalez' belted a key two-out double to right center to break the tie and give Tech a 3-1 lead with two outs in the ninth inning. Thomas Smith followed Gonzalez with a RBI single to add an insurance run for the Jackets.
Jax State looked to rally in its final at-bat as Andrew Bishop and Tyler Gamble laced back-to-back singles off of Tech's Dusty Isaacs. After pinch hitter Joe McGuire drew a walk to load up the bases, Gavin Golson reached on an infield grounder to score Bishop. JSU had the tying runs on base when Isaacs induced a pair of fly balls to close out the game and secure his eighth win of the season.
The Gamecocks scored the first run of the day in the fourth inning after Ryan Sebra drove in Griff Gordon with a single through the left side. Gordon, who owns the school record for hits in a single season, became the first Jax State player to top the century mark with a pair of hits in the game.
The Yellow Jackets answered in the top of the fifth after Ryan Peurifoy led off the frame with a triple down the right field line and scored on Mitch Earnest's sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.
JSU starter, Taylor Shields, turned in a quality start with 6.1 innings pitched and allowed just seven hits and one run, but did not get a decision. With Tech threatening in the seventh, the Gamecocks called on Michael Mason to get out of the inning with a pair of outs. Mason pitched 1 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and did not allow a hit.
Isaacs (8-5) picked up the win in relief after tossing the final 1 1/3 inning. Travis Stout (3-1) got stuck with the loss after giving up all three runs in the ninth inning.
Paschal Petrongolo, Andrew Bishop, Tyler Gamble and Gordon each had two hits to lead the Gamecocks, while Thomas Smith had three hits to lead Georgia Tech.
The Gamecocks finished with 11 hits in the game to finish with 662 hits on the season, a new school record.
POST-GAME QUOTES
Jacksonville State Head Coach Jim Case
Opening statement:
"It was a great college baseball game. Both teams' pitchers did a really nice job. Both teams had
their backs to the wall and the starters came out and did fantastic. It was one of those games
that was going to be decided late, and they were able to put together a rally. I'm really proud of
our team and how they responded after last night. It just wasn't good enough to get us over the
hump today."
On Travis Stout:
"It would be hard to say he's worn down. He came in and got us out of an inning like he's done
so many times. The first couple of hits they got off him they didn't hit really hard but did a nice
job of battling. He wasn't at his best but he was competing. I would never question his
preparation or his heart as far as competition goes."
On the end of the season:
"It's tough. In what we do, it's what have you done lately. As disappointed as we all are, and I
am too, I thought we would come here and play better than we did. At the same time, it
doesn't take away from what they accomplished last week. It will take time before we realize
that. We were very high last week and played about as well as we had all season. We didn't
play as well this weekend. The last inning was our team. You fall behind three and get your
heart broken a little bit. We get the bases loaded and no outs, and we have a chance. That's
been a characteristic of our team; we don't quit. We weren't able to come back and win today,
but I was proud we didn't lay over."
Senior Griff Gordon, RF
On hitting with runners in scoring position:
"That's always frustrating (leaving runners on), but we were still able to stay in the game up
until the very end."
On the end of the season:
"Right now, we are sad. Obviously, we're proud of what we've done. Tomorrow, we'll be happy
about the season. We had a really good season."
Sophomore Paschal Petrongolo, DH
On hitting with runners in scoring position:
"Some days they will fall, and some days they won't. It was one of the days where it didn't. We
hit balls hard, stayed in the count and had good at-bats. It just didn't work out for us."
On the end of the season:
"It was amazing to play with the group of seniors we have right now. It's crossed all of our
minds, the underclassmen and the juniors, that these guys aren't going to come back next year.
They're not going to be putting on the jerseys and running out on the field anymore. They have
taught us so much and been with us through everything. I've learned an incredible amount
from each. I could point to each and every senior and I could tell how they have helped me this
year. It's going to be a real loss to this program to have them not here."
