JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball returns to the road for a three-game stretch following back-to-back home wins at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
JSU (2-1) travels to ACC foe Virginia Tech for a Wednesday night matchup against the Hokies. It marks the first time the two programs have met on the hardwood. It will be head coach James Green's 13th time to lead a squad up against a current member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. He owns a 3-9 record, having beaten Louisville for each of the wins. Â
JSU is coming off a pair of wins in its first two home contests of the new season,
while VT is still in search of its first win after falling to Alabama State in the season opener.
The Gamecocks have started strong offensively to open the 2015-16 campaign, scoring at least 81 points in all three outings. Sophomore Malcolm Drumwright has been a key factor early on scoring a career-high 26 in the season opener at Central Michigan, then dishing nine assists in JSU's win over Oakwood on Monday night. It was the most assists for a Gamecock player in two seasons.
Next to Drumwright, the emergence of freshman Jared Hamilton has set the tone
for the Gamecocks on both sides of the court. Hamilton's scored in double figures in all three games, including a career-high 16 in his collegiate debut at Central Michigan on Nov. 13. His double-double of 14 points and 13 boards against Fort Valley State helped earn the Charlotte, N.C., native Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week honors in his first week of college action.
The Gamecocks will look to carry Monday night's success from a 36-point victory into Blacksburg. Against Oakwood, JSU sank 39 field goals, the most since hitting that same amount on Nov. 29, 2008 versus VMI in what was only the fifth game of the Coach Green era for Jacksonville.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN 3 with Joey Truncale providing play-by-play alongside Mac McArthy. Fans can also listen into the Gamecock Sports Network on 91.9 FM as Mike Parris will call the action.
JSU will head from Virginia Tech to Rock Hill S.C., to face Winthrop on Friday. Last season, the Gamecocks edged the Eagles 79-76 in overtime at The Pete. It was the closest any game has been during a current 12-game non-conference home winning streak for Jax State.
