JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team will be at home Tuesday night, Dec. 1, hosting old rival Samford at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The matchup will be a familiar one as the Gamecocks meet the Bulldogs on the hardwood for the 89th time in program history. The two schools haven't met since the 2007-2008 season, which was the last for Samford as a member of the Ohio Valley Conference. SU leads the overall series, 51-37, but the 37 wins for JSU is second-most for the Gamecocks against any Division I opponent.
In the early portion of the season, head coach James Green has worked to install his system to nine newcomers on the JSU roster. The learning curve came quickly as JSU opened the season with nine games in the first 15 days of the season.
Sophomore Malcolm Drumwright and junior Erik Durham are both averaging over 13 points per game to lead the Gamecocks on the offensive side. Returner JaQuail Townser averages nearly 10 point per game, while freshmen Jared Hamilton and Christian Cunningham are combining for 10 rebounds each contest.
The defense has been key for Jax State early on in the year. JSU hasn't allowed an opponent to reach its scoring average in any game to begin the season. The Gamecocks have also guarded the perimeter well allowing opponents to shoot just .290 from 3-point range, the lowest percentage among any OVC team. Meanwhile, a +4.1 turnover margin has JSU ranked second in that category among conference foes.
Both teams enter Tuesday's contest coming off a loss to another member of each other's conference. JSU fell 62-52 to Chattanooga of the Southern Conference in the championship game of the Emerald Coast Classic, while the Bulldogs dropped a 73-74 decision to Austin Peay of the OVC in their last game.
Tuesday night also marks SGA Night at The Pete. In addition, it will be White Out the Pete, presented by Sarrell Dental where fans are encouraged to wear white. To top it all off, the entire Marching Southerners will be in attendance to make for a home court atmosphere like no other.
The men's game tips at 8:00 following the women's game against Alcorn State beginning at 5:30. Admission is free for JSU students and all fans ages 18 and under.
