JACKSONVILLE - In their final non-conference home game of the season, the Gamecocks host the Bears of Northern Colorado from Greeley, Colo., on Monday night.
Â
JSU looks to turn things around with two games to play before entering its conference slate on Dec. 31. The Gamecocks have dropped five straight, but continue to show signs of improvement as a mix of nine newcomers begin to settle in to their roles in the system.
Â
Today's game will be a return visit by the Bears after JSU made the trip out to Colorado last December in a 69-60 loss for JSU. That contest marked the first game for JSU against a Colorado school since playing Colorado State in 2011.
Â
Sophomore Malcolm Drumwright's 15 points per game average paces JSU's offense. The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native was stellar during JSU's last homestand as he poured in 21 points against Samford, before dropping a career-high 30 against the Dolphins of Jacksonville. It was the first 30-point game for a JSU player in a 77-game span since Tarvin Gaines scored 31 during the 2012-13 season.
Â
Along with Drumwright, senior JaQuail Townser (9.1 PPG, 3.9 RPG) has been a fixture in a Gamecock lineup that's recently seen four different players miss at least one game dealing with injury.
Â
The Bears are averaging 75 points per game thanks to a strong three-point shooting percentage. UNC averages just over seven three-pointers a game shooting .392 from long range. A few seasons ago under coach B.J Hill, UNC led the nation with a .444 3-point percentage.
Admission in free to JSU students and fans 18 years or younger, along with anyone who presents a ticket stub from JSU's semifinal playoff game from Saturday.
JSU will take a brief break before taking on in-state foe Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Dec. 29. The Gamecocks will return home to begin Ohio Valley Conference play on Dec. 31 against SIU Edwardsville. Â
