Jax State Tennis Sweeps Alabama State

Men's Box Score | Women's Box Score

MONTGOMERY – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis teams braved the cold temperatures on Friday by posting a pair of wins over Alabama State in Montgomery.

After the match at Troy earlier in the week was postponed due to the winter wave that has covered the state over the last week, the JSU men made quick work of the Hornets with a 6-1 win, while the Gamecock women turned back ASU, 5-2.

In the men's contest, Jax State (4-4) bounced back from dropping the doubles point to sweep all six singles matches.  ASU's (0-7) lone point came after winning at No. 1 and 3 doubles.  ASU's pairing of Patrik Cvik and Digvijay Naruka edged JSU's team of Jefferson Wendler-Filho and Jaryd Reese, 6-4 at No. 1.  JSU's Felipe Wenzel and Gabriel Pansera and dropped a 6-4 decision to Ronald Mataba and Adam Coyne, 6-4.

Wendler-Filho, Reese and Wenzel all regrouped after doubles to record straight set wins on their respective courts.  Dylan Gee and Mathias Chaim, who teamed up for a doubles win at No. 2 also grabbed singles wins at No. 2 and 3 respectively.

Wendler-Filho won his third consecutive match and his first at the No. 1 spot in the line up with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Cvik.  Gee, playing at No. 2 for the first time this season, fell behind early to ASU's Takura Mlambo, he won the next two sets 6-3, 7-5.  Chaim tallied a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 3 over Karlo Skovrc, while Reese topped Mataba at No. 4 6-4, 6-3.

Wenzel and Felipe Diaz rounded out the singles points with quick matches at No. 5 and 6.  Wenzel cruised past ASU's Naruka, 6-2, 6-3.  Diaz dropped Jarred Thompson, 6-1, 6-2.

In the women's duel, Jax State (2-4) started strong by claiming the doubles point.  The JSU duo of Genevie Ulanday and Claudia Marsala downed ASU's (1-5) Arantxia Wijngaarde and Marine Cartier, 6-4.  Zoe Bizinos and Diana Mirceta topped Brankica Orlovic and Irina Cvijovic, 6-3.

Ulanday and Wijngaarde battled in a three set marathon in the frigid weather, but Ulanday bounced back after falling 6-2 in the opening set.  The newcomer forced a third-and-deciding set with a 6-4 second set win.  She went on to post the win after a 6-1 third set victory.

Ulanday's double partner also corralled a win at No. 3 as Marsala carded a 6-2, 7-5 win over Orlovic.  Bizinos and Sadey St. Amant bolstered the team score with wins at No. 5 and 6.  Bizinos won 6-2, 6-2 over Matabe Akoachere, while St. Amant registered a win in three sets over Nicole Tekelova.  After splitting the first two sets, Amant outlasted her foe for a 6-4 third set win.

After playing the first seven matches away from Jacksonville, the JSU women will host Chattanooga on Friday, Feb. 27 at the JSU Tennis Courts.  Match time is set for 1:30 p.m.  The Gamecock men have one more road match at Alabama on March 1 before hosting Kennesaw State on March 4.
