JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State tennis teams swept Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee State in the league home opener for both squads.
The JSU men bounced back from a pair of setbacks on Thursday at Auburn to blank the Tigers. The Gamecock women lost just two games in a 7-0 win over TSU. Both teams close out the home OVC weekend on Saturday against Belmont.
In the men's match, Jax State (6-9, 2-1 OVC) needed just one win at either of the two matches at No. 1 and No. 2 as JSU won by default at No. 3. The Gamecocks claimed both doubles matched to claim the first point of the day. Sophomore Jefferson Wendler-Filho and junior Pedro Wagner teamed up to top TSU's Joe Daniels and Darryl Hale, 8-4. The JSU tandem of Felipe Diaz and Jaryd Reese downed the Tigers' double tandem, 8-3.
In singles, JSU started off with a win at No. 6 due to a default and notched a pair of quick wins at No. 4 and No. 5. Mathias Chaim ousted TSU's Kyle Burton – 6-3, 6-2, while Reese quick-worked Grant Maddox – 6-0, 6-0. The top four spots were tough contests, but went in favor of JSU in straight sets at all four courts. Wendler-Filho posted his 11th OVC win in just his second season at JSU with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Hale at No. 1. Wagner carded a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Daniels. Dylan Gee finished up the scoring with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Daniel Bernal.
In the women's match, the Gamecocks (4-10, 2-3 OVC) did not surrender a game in doubles and lost just two games in the entire match – all at No. 1 singles with JSU's Claudia Marsala winning the first set 6-2 before tallying a 6-0 second set win for the point.
In doubles, Marsala and Genevie Ulanday defeated Attallah Eiland and Phyllicia Hemphill 8-0 at No. 1. Zoe Bizinos and Diana Mirceta registered an 8-0 win at No. 2 against TSU's Brittany Harris and Adrianne Presley. Danielle Kerindi and Sadey St. Amant disposed of Corlisa Clark and Nicole Madden at No. 3, 8-0.
Olivia Nguyen, Ulanday, Bizinos, Kerindi and St. Amant all posted 6-0, 6-0 wins over their respective opponent in singles.
The win by the women's club is the second OVC win in a row after earning the first conference win of the season at Southeast Missouri last weekend.
Saturday's match with Belmont at the JSU Tennis Courts is set for 2 p.m.
