Women's Box JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's tennis team recorded its third consecutive Ohio Valley Conference win on Saturday with a 5-2 decision over Belmont at the JSU Tennis Courts.
The Bruins avenged last season's two losses to the Gamecocks in the men's match with a 5-2 win.
In the women's match, the Gamecocks rallied in singles play after dropping the pivotal doubles point to the Bruins. JSU managed to claim one of the doubles court as the No. 3 duo of
Danielle Kerindi and
Sadey St. Amant carded an 8-1 win over BU's Maddie Gilley and Suzanna Stapler.
Jax State (5-10, 3-3 OVC) won five of the six singles matches, but it came down to the action at No. 2 and 4. Senior
Zoe Bizinos clinched the match with a come-from-behind three set win. Bizinos was blanked 6-0 by BU's Abbie Mather in the opening set, but bounced back to win 7-6, 6-3 for the fourth point.
Olivia Nguyen closed out the scoring with another three set match. Nguyen would split the first two sets and finished off Laura Van Eeckhoudt in the third set, 6-3.
Claudia Marsala ousted Lindsey Whitehead 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1, while
Genevie Ulanday notched a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kendall Warren at No. 3. St. Amant moved to a team-best 4-1 against OVC competition with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Ann Lauren Fiepke.
In the men's contest, the Bruins started strong by taking the doubles point. JSU's tandem of
Felipe Diaz and
Jaryd Reese registered a win at No. 2 as the duo downed Cedric Dujacquier and Caio Niel, 8-2.
Reese, who moved to 3-1 in the OVC, also grabbed one of the Gamecocks' points at No. 5. He quick-worked Niel – 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore
Dylan Gee remained perfect (4-0) in the OVC with a three set win at No. 2. Gee won the first set over Marko Lovrinovic, 6-3, but fell by the identical score in the second set to set up a third-and-deciding set. Gee edged Lovrinovic 7-5 to earn the point.
Jax State will travel to Florence, Alabama on Tuesday, March 31 to face former Division II rival North Alabama. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m. on the UNA campus. The Gamecocks return to OVC action next weekend, hosting SIU Edwardsville and Eastern Illinois.
