Morehead State Claims Series With 13-6 Saturday Win

JACKSONVILLE – Morehead State proved why it is the top hitting team in NCAA Division I Baseball as the Eagles pounded out 16 hits on Saturday to down Jacksonville State, 13-6, at Rudy Abbott Field.

The Eagles claimed the series against the Gamecocks after taking Friday night's 10-inning contest, 4-2, over Jax State.  MSU improved to 32-18 on the season and 17-9 in OVC play and in to sole possession of second place in the league standings after Austin Peay topped SIU Edwardsville on Saturday.  The Gamecocks dropped to 26-24 overall and an even 13-13 against OVC foes.  JSU remains in contention to secure one of the top-six spots to the annual Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.

The Eagles, who stranded 14 base runners on Friday night, took advantage of four costly JSU errors as they broke open a 2-all contest with five runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to break open the contest with an 11-3 lead.  MSU produced seven doubles in the game, including a pair each by Robby Spencer and Alex Stephens.

JSU took an early 2-0 lead in the Saturday tilt as senior Ryan Sebra, who was one of seven seniors honored prior to the game, roped a double to right center, plating Gavin Golsan and Clayton Daniel.  The Ormond Beach, Florida-native would tack on two more RBI with his second home run of the weekend and ninth of the season with a two-run shot over the left field fence.  Sebra had three of the JSU's 10 hits in the contest.  Juniors Tyler Gamble and Paul Angel carded multiple hits in the setback.

Jax State freshman Jake Walsh looked strong for the third consecutive Saturday as he tossed 5.1 innings before running getting in to trouble in the MSU sixth.  The Melbourne, Florida-right hander allowed just five hits and five runs and posted a pair of strikeouts.  He suffered the loss in the affair and moved to 3-3 on the season.

After MSU took a 7-2 lead in the sixth, the Gamecocks got one of the runs back in their at bat as freshman Hayden White led off the frame with a solo home run to right.  It was his fifth of the season for the Prattville, Alabama-catcher.
JSU scored its final run in the eighth as Daniel's double down the left field line drive in Golsan, who reached on an Eagle fielding miscue.

The Eagles plated the final two runs in the ninth for the final outcome.

JSU and MSU will close out the weekend series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. Mother's Day contest at Rudy Abbott Field.  All JSU students and fans 18 and under are admitted free.  The game will also be on the Gamecock Sports Radio Network.
