JACKSONVILLE – Fresh off a midweek road victory at Southeast Missouri, the Jacksonville State men's basketball team returns home Saturday to meet one of the tougher teams in the Ohio Valley Conference in UT Martin.
Â
JSU (6-14, 2-3 OVC) will be looking to put together back-to-back conference wins for the first time this season. The task will be a difficult one, as the Skyhawks (10-8, 2-1 OVC) enter the contest leading the West division of the OVC standings. In their last outing, UTM knocked off Tennessee Tech, who was previously unbeaten in league action at 4-0.
Â
Against SEMO on Wednesday, the Gamecocks shot 51% from the floor and generated the most points (74) since a mid-December win over Northern Colorado. Freshman Missouri native DelFincko Bogan scored a career-high seven points in front of a contingent of hometown fans. Along with Bogan, three other Gamecocks from the Show Me state combined for 38 points in the win over the Redhawks.
Â
UTM arrives at Pete Mathews Coliseum averaging 72 points per game, and shooting well from 3-point range, making more than eight threes per game. Saturday, UTM will face the second best team in the OVC in defending behind the arc. The Gamecock defense will attempt to hold its opponent below their scoring average for the 13th time this season.
Â
The series is one of the most-played for the Gamecock program. The two schools are meeting for the 60th time in series history. JSU has come away victorious in 38 of the previous 59 meetings. It marks the second most wins over any current Division I opponent for Jax State.
Â
JSU sophomore Malcolm Drumwright has become one of the leaders for head coach James Green's young squad. The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native is fifth in the OVC for minutes played averaging 33.2 per game. Making the most of his time, he's averaging nearly 15 points per game, and his .816 free throw percentage is among the highest in the conference. He sits just 22 points away from reaching 500 points in his young Gamecock career.
Â
Behind Drumwright, Erik Durham (11.8), Jared Hamilton (9.0) and senior JaQuail Townser (9.6) each help fuel a balanced offensive attack.
Â
The men will tip off at 12 p.m. and will be followed by the JSU women's game against the Skyhawks at 2 p.m. It will be America's First Credit Union and Sarrell Dental Kids Day at JSU, with both partners on hand to give away prizes to kids in attendance. Admission is free for all fans ages 18 and under and for all JSU students. The Leeds (Ala.) Jump Rope Team will perform at half time of the men's game, while the JSU Youth Cheer Clinic will perform during the women's game.
