JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team will look to bounce back at home, Saturday afternoon against Tennessee State, after becoming the latest victim of Belmont's undefeated Ohio Valley Conference run on Thursday night.
The Gamecocks (8-16, 4-5 OVC) are in the midst of a grueling stretch of their OVC schedule facing the top three teams in the East Division, home and away, for six straight games. Saturday marks game number two of that run.
JSU trails the overall series with the Tigers, 11-15, but has found a great deal of success at home. Jax State beat TSU, 55-50, at The Pete last season in the most recent game between the two schools. JSU has won 10 of the 13 meetings that have been played in Jacksonville. They have only one road win in the series.
The Gamecocks may be shorthanded in the matchup against TSU (14-6, 5-2 OVC), after leading scorer Malcolm Drumwright and starting freshman Christian Cunningham both of had to leave the court due to injury on Thursday night. Jax State will lean toward senior Jeremy Watson and juniors Greg Tucker and Erik Durham, who have each had a 24-point or better in their last three outings.
Against Belmont, JSU shut down the most efficient 3-point offense in the league, forcing the Bruins to go 4-for-20 from behind the arc. It was the seventh time this season the OVC's leading 3-point defense has held its opponent to four or fewer treys in a game.
At 14-6, TSU is close to its best start in the program's Division I history dating back to 1978. The Tigers opened conference play 5-0, but have since lost two straight and enter this weekend only two spots higher in the standings than JSU.
The men's contest will tip at 4:30 p.m. following the women's game, which is also against Tennessee State. Admission is free to JSU students and all fans ages 18 and under.
