JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State and SIU Edwardsville like to settle things in overtime in the last three battles as Sunday the Cougars of SIUE edged JSU 2-1 in the opening moments of the second overtime session at the JSU Soccer Field.
The extra time contests goes back to the 2014 Ohio Valley Conference title match as SIUE claimed a 3-2 decision, but the Gamecocks avenged the loss last season in Edwardsville with a 1-0 result. With the loss, Jax State finished the first OVC home weekend 1-1 after recording a 1-0 win over Eastern Illinois on Friday. JSU (4-8-1, 1-3 OVC) will remain at home next weekend as it welcomes Southeast Missouri and UT Martin to campus on Friday and Sunday respectively. SIUE also picked up a weekend split after dropping a 1-0 contest to Belmont in Nashville, Tennessee on Friday.
SIUE's Ashley Lewman connected on the golden goal in the opening seconds of the second overtime session after netting a cross from Emily Grahl.
After recording a season-best 27 shots on Friday against EIU, the Gamecocks turned in 10 total shots, with eight of those coming in the second half and overtime sessions. SIUE finished with 22 total shots with 12 coming in the opening half.

Kayla Thompson drew SIUE's goalkeeper Juli Rossi out of the goal and Thompson's shot was deflected by Rossi to Monroe for the scoring play. Thompson joined
Mackenzie Bellows as the only two Gamecocks with multiple shot attempts.
SIUE took the lead eight minutes before the halftime break as Avery Anderson drilled a shot from the top of the box, sailing in to the back of the net.

Caroline Robinson finished out the weekend nine saves, including seven stops on Sunday against SIUE.
JSU will honor its seniors prior to Friday's 7 p.m. match with the Redhawks of SEMO. It will be JSU Student Government Association Night with free t-shirts and other prizes for the student body.
