JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team recorded the most-lopsided win in the history of the program with an 89-26 thumping of Brewton-Parker College on Tuesday night at Pete Mathews Coliseum
The 63-point margin breaks the old record for margin of victory, 62 points, set by the 1889-90 club against Miles College. JSU turned in a 112-50 win over the Golden Bears. The Gamecocks also established a new mark for fewest points allowed by holding the NAIA program to 26 total points. JSU held Southeast Missouri to 34 points in January of 2015 in a 70-34 rout. Jax State reached the 80-plus points mark for the first time since registering 83 points against Morehead State in February of 2015.
JSU (4-4) reached those marks with a season-best 49 percent shooting from the field (37-of-75) and limiting BPC (2-2) to just 11 field goals on the night. The Gamecocks dominated in the paint with 56 points and took advantage of 29 Baron turnovers and turned them in to 40 points on the offensive end of the floor. JSU had a season-best 22 fast break points and the Gamecock bench aided with 35 points.
The Gamecocks actually trailed 5-0 in the first few minutes of the contest, but rallied to out-score BPC 19-7 over the final 5:48 of the opening stanza. JSU extended the lead out to 26-7 in the first three minutes of the second quarter before the Barons managed to score in the second period at the 7:31 mark of the period. JSU took command of the game as it finished the opening half with a 25 point, 39-14 lead.
Jax State maintained its dominance on both ends of the floor in the second half as it connected on 13-of-16 from the field in the third period and added eight baskets in the final quarter. The Barons were limited to five field goals in the final 20 minutes.
Every Gamecock that was available etched their name in the scoring column, led by senior
Briana Benson's team-high 14 points and six rebounds. The Jonesboro, Georgia native and JSU's leading scorer was 6-of-11 from the field in 19 minutes of action. Senior
Destany McLin is starting to be like the All-Ohio Valley Conference performer before she endured an injury last season as the Athens, Alabama product posted 10 points and grabbed six boards. She shared team-high honors in the rebounding department with Benson as both grabbed six boards each.
Tyler Phelion, who made her first start of the season, tallied 13 points on six baskets. Redshirt sophomore
Leah Strain led the Jax State bench scoring with 10 points. The guard from Woodland, Alabama was 4-of-5 from the field along with three assists and a pair of steals in a season-high 22 minutes.
Junior transfer
Kiandria 'Ki-Ki' Patterson was inserted in to the starting line up for the second time this season and finished with nine points. Junior
Gretchen Morrison matched Patterson with a trio of three pointers. Senior
Lacey Buchanon rounded out the starters with eight points. Redshirt freshman
Jada Coggins collected her first points in a JSU uniform with six points, while
Tasha Magruder pitched in five points. Senior

"Everyone did something positive today and sometimes in games like this, things tend to get sloppy and I thought we were not that and we maintained a reasonable level of play throughout the game," said head coach
Rick Pietri. "I am proud of our team for being able to maintain a reasonable level of play. I thought everyone got a significant amount of time on the floor tonight. Once the game is no longer in doubt, it is about continuing to work on yourself and how you play."
After closing out the first month of the season with eight games, the Gamecocks open the month of December on the road in Savannah, Georgia on Saturday, December 3. JSU will face off against the Tigers of Savannah State. Tip off is set for 3 p.m. CST.
