COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Jacksonville State Gamecocks continue their six-day, three-game road trip Monday night with a matchup against Maryland at 6 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
While the meeting between the Gamecocks and the Terps will be the first in in the history of the two programs, the matchup has one interesting tie-win; Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon. Turgeon was the JSU head coach for two seasons (1998-2000) following the retirement of legendary Jacksonville State head coach Bill Jones. Turgeon led the Gamecocks to their first winning record of the Division I era in 1999-00 with a 17-11 mark in the Atlantic Sun.
JSU is coming off an 88-83 loss in overtime to ULM in Monroe on Saturday. Despite the defeat, junior Norbertas Giga picked up his team-best third double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Tyrik Edwards posted a career-best 18 points. Greg Tucker (17) and Malcolm Drumwright (15) rounded out the Gamecocks' double-digit scorers.
Maryland is 10-1 and receiving votes in both the AP and USA Today polls. The Terps began the season on a seven-game winning streak before falling to Pitt at home. Maryland has since won three in a row - including a notable 71-70 win over Oklahoma State.
