MACON, Ga. – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis teams lost matches to Mercer on Thursday on the campus of Mercer in Macon.
The Bears topped Jax State 5-2 in the men's match, while MU posted a 6-1 win over the Gamecock women. The JSU men dropped to 3-8 on the season and the women's squad fell to 2-7 overall.
In the men's match, senior Pedro Wagner turned in a nice day that began with teaming up with Mathias Chaim in doubles for a win. The duo made quick work of MU's pairing of Zacharie El Ayat and Nicolas Guillon, 6-1, at No. 3 doubles. Wagner carried the momentum from doubles in to his singles match with Guillon at the top singles spot. Wagner bested Guillon in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Freshman Andres Gomez won his fourth match of the season and third in a row after disposing of MU's Arsav Mohanty. Gomez and Mohanty split the first two sets before Gomez recorded a 10-7 win in the third-and-deciding set.
Gomez' win at No. 6 was one of three matches that went to three sets, JSU's Jaryd Reese lost the opening set to Arnav Mohanty, but collected a 7-5 win in the second set to force a third set. Mohanty carded a 6-3 win in the final set. Freshman Liu Shao Chun won the second set with Anderson Scarpa, but could not come away with the win as Scarpa won 6-1 in the third to post the point.
In the women's contest, JSU's Courtney Conley won her second consecutive match with a three-set win over Christie Cesarini. Conley bounced back from a 6-1 loss in the first set to win in straight sets – 6-3, 10-8.
The Jax State tandem of Claudia Marsala and Diana Mirceta continued their impressive play together in doubles by winning their fourth in a row. Marsala and Mirceta needed little time to claim a 6-1 win over MU's Haley Powell and Xandra Fougner.
The women's squad returns to action on Saturday against Chattanooga. Match time is set for 12 p.m. on the UTC campus. The JSU men will be idle until February 26 against Nicholls State in Statesboro, Georgia.
