Women's BoxNASHVILLE – Jacksonville State first-year head coach
Andres Amores picked up his first Ohio Valley Conference win on both the men's and women's side as JSU swept a pair of Friday afternoon matches over Belmont.
The JSU men (5-9, 1-0 OVC), who have been idle from competition since February 28, posted a 5-2 win over the Bruins, while the women's squad (3-11, 1-1 OVC) collected a 6-1 victory over a Belmont club that was selected third in the OVC Preseason prognostications.
In the men's match, Jax State started string by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles. JSU's tandem of
Austin McCormick and
Jaryd Reese needed little time putting their Belmont opposition away as they posted a 6-2 win over Zak Khan and Stephen Goldman at No. 2. The senior duo of
Pedro Wagner and
Mathias Chaim collected a 6-2 win over Bruno Russo and Adam Rudowski at No. 3.
JSU's turned in wins at No. 3-6 in singles, including a trio of three-set wins by Reese, Liu Shao Vhun and
Vinicio Hadlich at No. 3, 4 and 5 respectively. Reese bounced back from dropping a 6-4 first set to Rudowski to win in straight sets – 7-6, 6-3. Shao Chun also recovered from losing the first set 6-3 to Goldman to record a 7-5, 6-2 win. Belmont's Khan claimed the opening set 6-3, but could not get the second set as Hadlich forced the third-and-deciding set with a 6-4 win in the second. Hadlich outlasted Khan in the third set with a 7-6 win.
JSU's
Andres Gomez added a point for the Gamecocks with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 over Russo.
In the women's duel, Jax State posted a win in doubles after claiming courts No. 1 and 3.
Olivia Nguyen and
Genevie Ulanday topped the Bruins' pairing of Lindsey Whitehead and Kendall Warren, 6-3. After Belmont took the match at No. 2, it came down to a tie-breaker at No. 3 as the JSU tandem of
Sadey St. Amant and
Courtney Conley delivered a 7-6 win at No. 3 to clinch the point.
Amant's day would get better as the Ocean Springs, Mississippi native finished off the Bruins with a 6-2, 6-4 match-clinching point at No. 5 over Belmont's Abbie Mather. Conley also recorded a win at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ann Lauren Fiepke at No. 6.
Nguyen and Ulanday would also claim singles wins at No. 1 and 3 respectively. Nguyen turned back Whitehead at No. 1, 6-3, 6-2, while Ulanday ousted Kendall Warren 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3.
Claudia Marsala topped Laura Van Eeckhoudt, 6-4, 6-3.
JSU continues its weekend in the Music City as the women will play a morning match against Lipscomb, followed by an OVC tilt at Tennessee State later in the day. JSU and TSU will also square off in men's action on the TSU campus.
