JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The preseason favorites in the Ohio Valley Conference will square off to start league play this weekend at University Field, where Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech will play a three-game softball series.
Defending OVC Tournament Champion TTU was picked to win the league in the preseason poll, where the Gamecocks were just five total votes behind the Golden Eagles in second. The two will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday before wrapping up the weekend with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free for all fans ages 18 and under and for JSU students.
The Gamecocks and Golden Eagles have found similar roads to the opening weekend of league play and are looking to get things rolling as conference games start.
TTU enters the weekend with an 8-15 record, while the Gamecocks stand at 9-12. Both are hoping to use this weekend's series as a catapult into the rest of the season.
It begins a stretch of seven OVC homes games in eight days for JSU, who hosts doubleheaders with Eastern Illinois and SIUE on Friday and Saturday, respectively, of next week.
JSU has been led at the plate by junior Taylor Sloan, who boasts a .379 average, while senior Ella Denes' .371 clip is second on the team and compliments five doubles, two homers and 15 RBI. Sloan is riding a team-best eight-game hitting streak, while Denes has hit safely in her last five games.
Sabrie Neeb leads TTU at the plate with a .277 average, while Alyssa Richards is providing the Golden Eagles' pop with three homers and 12 RBI.
Free video of both games on Saturday will be carried on the OVC Digital Network, while free online audio will be available on Sunday at www.jsugamecocksports.com.
