
JSU Tennis Sweeps Tennessee State

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team moved to 2-0 in Ohio Valley Conference play and the Gamecock women turned in their second OVC win after sweeping Tennessee State on Saturday on the TSU campus.
The JSU men, who downed Belmont on Friday to start the conference slate, improved to 6-9 overall with a 6-1 decision, while the Jax State women collected the fourth win of the season after blanking the Tigers, 7-0.
In the men's match, JSU the early lead with the doubles point. The Gamecocks' pairing of Andres Gomez and Liu Shao Chun topped TSU's top duo of Daniel Bernal and Amir Daniel, 6-2. JSU sealed the point at No. 2 as Austin McCormick and Jaryd Reese turned back TSU's team of Grant Maddox and Kyle Burton, 6-3.
JSU continued its dominance in the match by winning five of the six singles matches, including a pair of three set matches by Shao Chun and Gomez. Shao Chun split the first two sets with Burton before ousting Burton 6-1 in the final set at No. 4. Gomez opened his match with Maddox with ease after a 6-1 opening set win, but faced a pair of tiebreaker sets in the final two sets. He turned in a point with a 7-6 final set win at No. 5. Reese collected a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 over TSU's Shashank Nautiyal. Mathias Chaim recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Jorge Rodriguez. Samuel Kellett needed little time putting away Daniel at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-0 decision.
In the women's contest, the Gamecocks regrouped from a 4-1 non-conference loss at Lipscomb in the morning to earn the second OVC win of the season. JSU did not allow TSU a game in doubles as the No. 2 tandem of Claudia Marsala and Sadey St. Amant downed Taylor Patterson and Phoenix Gandy, 6-0. At No. 3, JSU's Courtney Conley and Isabella Calves knocked off Ani Popiashvilli and Phyllicia Hemphill, 6-0.
Nguyen kept the momentum going in singles with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 1 over Popiashvili. Marsala and Genevie Ulanday quick-worked their TSU opposition with 6-1, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-2 wins respectively. St. Amant carded a 6-5, 6-1 win at No. 4, while Conley and Calves rounded out the sweep in singles.
JSU's men's OVC home opener will be on March 26, hosting Tennessee Tech. The women will face Southeast Missouri on the same date. Both matches are set for 10 a.m. at the JSU Tennis Courts.
