LIVE STATS: GAME 1 | GAME 2
JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team continues its home stretch on Saturday, when the Gamecocks host in-state rival Samford in a doubleheader at University Field starting at 1 p.m.
The Gamecocks (7-8) and Bulldogs (9-6) square off in the twinbill that starts a unique three-game weekend series, one that will conclude with a single game on Sunday in Birmingham. Saturday's doubleheader at University Field is free for JSU students and all fans ages 18 and under.
The second home date in three days is part of a stretch for JSU that will see four of five games at home and 12 of 17 in the friendly confines of University Field. JSU dropped its home opener 10-3 to No. 2 Alabama on Wednesday in a game much closer than the score dictates. The Gamecocks had the bases loaded with two outs in the sixth and trailing by just three before a big seventh inning for the Crimson Tide stretched its lead.
Jax State is led offensively by senior Ella Denes, who has reached base in 10-straight games and boasts a team-high .391 batting average. Junior Taylor Sloan is second on the squad with a .364 average, including three doubles, a triple and a homer.
In the circle, senior Casey Akenberger's .3.23 earned run average is tops on the team, just ahead of freshan Kirsten Titus' 3.68.
The Bulldogs are led by Hannah Trombley, who entered the weekend batting .353 with five homers and 18 RBI, while the tandem of Mollie Hanson (2.19 ERA) and Jessica Stone (2.29 ERA) leads the way in the circle.
Saturday will mark the 54th time that JSU and Samford have met on the softball diamond, with JSU holding a 35-18 advantage in the series and a 19-7 advantage at University Field. Jax State has won the last 11 games in the series.
