JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team will host a big three-game Ohio Valley Conference series this weekend, when the first-place Gamecocks welcome third-place Morehead State to University Field.
The Gamecocks (25-14, 14-0 OVC) and Eagles (20-17, 7-5 OVC) will start the weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and will wrap up the series with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free for JSU students and all fans ages 18 and under.
JSU puts its best start to a conference season in program history on the line, as well as a school-record 18-game winning streak against conference foes, while the Eagles look to gain ground in the conference standings with just four weeks left in the regular season.
JSU is coming off a 4-0 weekend on the road last week that included doubleheader sweeps at Southeast Missouri and UT Martin, while the Eagles split a twinbill at SIUE. Jax State was led during the weekend by senior Ella Denes, whose big week netted her OVC Player of the Week honors on Monday.
Denes, an outfielder from Pisgah, Ala., hit .450 during the week and continued that hot streak at the plate in a 4-2 win over Alabama A&M on Thursday. She went 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run home run in the AAMU game, raising her batting average to a team-leading .402 that ranks third in the OVC.
In the circle, JSU has been led by sophomore Whitney Gillespie's 8-1 record and 1.46 earned run average, but junior Taylor West has emerged of late. West has won six of her last seven decisions and has allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of those six wins.
In league play, JSU is hitting .363 as a team while limiting opponents to a .196 average. Denes is batting .451 in OVC play, second on the team to sophomore Emily Woodruff's .457 average. The duo leads a group of five JSU players that are hitting over .420 in conference games.
The Eagles are led by Robin Leighton's .404 average, while her six home runs are second to Karly Thompson's team-leading seven. In the circle, Allison Rager has been the MSU ace with a 10-4 record and a 3.11 ERA.
Saturday's games will be streamed on the OVC Digital Network, while Sunday's game will offer an audio-only feed at www.jsugamecocksports.com.
