JACKSONVILLE – With postseason implications on the line heading into the final weekend of the regular season, the Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis teams still remain in contention after splitting Friday's matches with Murray State.
The JSU men turned in a convincing 7-0 win over the Racers, while the women dropped a 6-1 decision to MSU. With the win by the men's club, the Gamecocks moved to 5-3 in Ohio Valley Conference, inching close to officially clinching a spot in the six-team OVC Tennis Championships in Nashville, Tennessee next weekend. The field will be announced after all the Saturday matches in the league. The Gamecocks close out the regular season against Austin Peay on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the JSU Tennis Courts.
Even though the women suffered a setback on Friday, the team is still alive to secure spot to join the field next week in Nashville, Tennessee. The Gamecocks will need a win over the Lady Govs on Saturday to extend the season. JSU (4-5) and APSU (5-4) would be tied at 5-5 in OVC matches and a Jax State win would be the tiebreaker.
In the men's match, JSU clinched the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3. The Gamecocks' No. 1 team of Andres Gomez and Shao Chun Liu downed the Racers' duo of Marcel Ueltzhoeffer and David Schrott, 6-2. JSU's tandem of Pedro Wagner and Mathias Chaim remained undefeated in OVC doubles action and moved to 6-0 in league matches with a 6-2 win over Srdjan Trosic and Javier Villar.
JSU finished off the clean sweep by winning five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Wagner notched his first OVC win by ousting Ueltzhoeffer at No 1, 7-7, 6-1. Jaryd Reese split the first two sets at No. 2 against Will True and claimed his sixth OVC win overall and fifth at the No. 2 spot with a 12-10 tiebreaker. Chaim and Vinicio Hadlich posted wins at No. 3 and 4, while Gomez moved to a team-best 7-1 in OVC matches with a 6-0, 7-5 win over David Hess. Shao Chun finished his Friday with a win in singles, downing Villar – 6-3, 6-1.
In the women's contest, Sadey St. Amant recorded the Gamecocks' point with a three-set win at No. 5. St. Amant won the first set over MSU's Alina Schobol, 6-4, but dropped the second set, 7-5 to set up the third-and-deciding set. St. Amant claimed the point after turning back Schibol, 10-4. Claudia Marsala saw herself in a three-set duel with Amina Hadzic at No. 2. Hadzic won the first set 7-6, but Marsala bounced back to top her opponent, 6-2, before falling 10-6 in the super tiebreaker.
JSU will honor its three seniors prior to Saturday's match against APSU. The festivities honoring Olivia Nguyen, Sam Kellett and Wagner will get started around 9:30 a.m. at the JSU Tennis Courts.
