2016 OVC Tennis Championship Draw
JACKSONVILLE – Even though the Jacksonville State dropped a tough 4-3 setback to Austin Peay in the regular season finale, the Gamecocks will be making their 13
th consecutive trip to the Ohio Valley Conference Tennis Championships next weekend in Nashville, Tennessee.
The JSU women also suffered a close match to the Lady Govs by the identical score and finished on the outside of the top-six teams in the league and wrapped up the 2016 season on Saturday. The women's squad finished the season at 6-17 overall and 4-6 in OVC play.
The Gamecocks (9-14, 5-4 OVC) will open the 2016 edition of the OVC Tennis Championships as the No. 4 seed in the field and will face No. 5 seed Morehead State on Friday, April 22 at 10 a.m. All matches will be played at Nashville's Centennial Park. JSU topped Morehead State, 5-2, back on April 2 in Jacksonville. The winner of the JSU-MSU match will face top-seeded and regular season champion, Tennessee Tech on Saturday, April 23. The championship match is set for Sunday, April 24. Jax State will be looking for its fourth OVC Tournament title after winning it in 2007, 2009 and 2014.
In Saturday's match, Austin Peay took the lead with the doubles point, but JSU's tandem of
Pedro Wagner and
Mathias Chaim remained perfect as the No. 3 pairing with a 6-4 win over Alex Kartsonis and Chad Woodham.
Wagner, playing in his final home match at Jax State, turned in a win at No. 1 as he knocked off APSU's top player, Aaron Jumonville in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.
Andres Gomez and
Shao Chun Liuhave been steady in their first season in the red and white as both won at No. 5 and 6 respectively. Gomez turned back Kartsonis – 7-5, 6-3, while Liu recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win over Chad Woodham. Chaim fell short at the No. 3 spot after splitting the first two sets with Manuel Montenegro. Montenegro won the third-and-deciding set, 6-2.
In the women's match, JSU's doubles team of
Claudia Marsala and
Diana Mirceta turned in a win at No. 2 doubles as they blanked the APSU duo of Brittney Covington and Claudi Yanes Garcia, 6-0. The Lady Govs were able to collect the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3.
JSU was able to grab points at the bottom of the singles lineup as Mirceta won both of her matches on the day after finishing the day with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Hannah Tatlock at No. 4.
Sadey St. Amant finished her sophomore season with a 7-2 singles record in OVC play after posting a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Covington.
Courtney Conley rounded out the points with a win at No. 6. After APSU's Isabela Jovanovic won the opening set, 6-3, Conley bounced back to win the match – 6-4, 7-5.
