Box Score MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State completed the sweep of Jacksonville State with a 14-5 win on Sunday at Allen Field on the MSU campus.
The weekend sweep is the first for the Gamecocks, who fell to 29-22 overall and 17-10 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The three wins on the weekend by the Eagles pushed their season's mark to 30-22 on the season and 16-11 against the OVC. It is the first time MSU has swept JSU and the second consecutive sweep by MSU. JSU will close out the regular season next weekend at Rudy Abbott Field against the Skyhawks of UT Martin. The series will get started on Thursday, May 19 at 6 p.m.
The Eagles scored six of their 14 runs in the first three innings to hold a 6-0 lead before the Gamecocks' lineup tallied four runs in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 6-4. MSU touched Jax State starter
Derrick Adams for six runs on nine hits in just 2.1 innings of work for the JSU lefty. MSU, who scored seven of their 15 runs in the final three frames in Saturday's comeback win, picked up right where it left off with three runs in the first, one in the second and a pair in the third.
JSU's scoring was aided by the long ball at Allen Field. Senior
Tyler Gamble, who had a solid weekend at the plate in the three-game series, belted his second home run of the series with a three-run blast in the fifth inning. Senior
Paschal Petrongolo followed Gamble with a solo blast over the netting in right field. It was the fifth time this season that JSU has put together back-to-back home runs.
Petrongolo added the Gamecocks' fifth run of the contest in the seventh with a towering shot over the right field fence. Gamble and Petrongolo combined to drive in all five JSU runs. Sophomore
Taylor Hawthorne and senior
Elliot McCummings finished with multiple hits as the trio collected seven of JSU's 12 total hits. Hawthorne added his third hit of the day with a single in the ninth.
Sophomore
Grant Chandler had a nice outing out of the bullpen as he settled down the MSU bats with 3.1 innings of work and allowed just four hits and touched for one run. MSU's Luke Humphreys recorded the win, while Tyler Keele finished the final four frames to collect a save. The Eagles combined for seven strikeouts.
The Eagles broke open a 7-5 contest in the bottom of the seventh as they tacked on seven runs on five hits in the frame. Trevor Snyder's three-run home run highlighted the frame, followed by Niko Hulsizer's second home run of the weekend. He finished the day 3-for-5 and drove in three runs.
