JSU Game Notes / TTU Game Notes
JACKSONVILLE – After securing its first Ohio Valley Conference win of the season last Saturday, the Jacksonville State women's basketball team looks to make it two in a row with a visit to Tennessee Tech this Saturday.
Â
The Gamecocks (8-8, 1-3 OVC) defeated Austin Peay, 65-45, in their last outing on Jan. 7. JSU forced 17 turnovers, resulting in a 22-4 points-off-turnovers advantage for head coach Rick Pietri's squad. Jax State now travels to Cookeville, Tenn., for the first of two meetings against the Golden Eagles this season.
Â
Tech (5-12, 2-2 OVC) went 1-1 last weekend with an overtime loss to Austin Peay, before bouncing back to defeat Murray State. At the quarter-mark of the conference season, TTU sits fifth in the league standings behind a trio of unbeatens; Morehead State, Belmont and Eastern Kentucky. JSU enters the weekend tied for eighth.
Â
Saturday marks the 28th meeting between JSU and Tennessee Tech, all coming since JSU joined the OVC in 2004. The Golden Eagles hold a 19-8 series lead, but the Gamecocks have won five of the last six meetings.
Â
In last year's overtime loss at Tennessee Tech, Tyler Phelion recorded a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds, while Briana Benson led JSU scorers with 17 points. That same duo is averaging double figures this season as will with Benson scoring 13.4 per contest and Phelion at 10.8. Senior Lacey Buchanon isn't far behind since her recent scoring surge. She's totaled at least 12 points in five of the last seven games.
Â
Along with Phelion, the Gamecocks are getting help defensively down low by Rayven Pearson and newcomer Tasha Magruder. Pearson and Magruder each average over four rebounds per game in league play. As a whole, the defense ranks in the top half of the OVC in points allowed and scoring margin in addition to being second in defensive rebounds and first in defensive rebounding efficiency. It's been 10 games since an opponent reached double-digit second-chance points.
Â
Buchanon leads in assists, but the Gamecocks have also leaned on senior Kelly Naughton and underclassmen Leah Strain and Morgan Towells to run the point in recent games.
Â
Saturday's game will tip at 5:30 at the Eblen Center on the Tennessee Tech campus. The game will be streamed on the OVC Digital Network as well as broadcast across the Gamecock Sports Network with Mike Parris on the call. Live stats are also available with links available on JSUGamecockSports.com. The game will precede the JSU/TTU men's contest.
