Burchmann Leads JSU Men at Louisville Cardinal Challenge

FINAL RESULTS

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – The Jacksonville State men's golf team got its 2017-18 season underway with a ninth-place finish at the Louisville Cardinal Challenge that wrapped up on Sunday.
 
The Gamecocks played the three-day event on the par-72, 7,192-yard University of Louisville Golf Club and got a solid debut from sophomore Thomas Burchmann. The Yerba Buena Argentina native finished eighth in the 78-player field and led JSU to a ninth-place finish in the 13-team event.
 
The Gamecocks were just one shot out of a seventh-place tie between ULM and Winthrop and only four shots out of sixth. JSU capped a 54-hole score of 897 with a final-round 299 that followed an opening-round 296 and a Saturday 302. Host Louisville won the event with a 9-under 855.
 
Burchmann was consistent for the Gamecocks, opening the tournament with a 1-over 73 and then carding an even-par 72 in each of the final two rounds. He finished tied for eighth with Louisville's Keegan de Lange with a 1-over 217. Patrick Flavin of Miami (Ohio) won the event with a 9-under 207, edging out Louisville individual Erik Dulik in second at 7-under.
 
JSU freshman Quim Vidal Mora was the Gamecocks' second-lowest scorer while competing as an individual. The native of Barcelona, Spain, tied for 28th with a 7-over 223, thanks to a final-round 74 on Sunday.
 
For JSU's lineup, Jesus Montenegro tied for 34th after a final-round 73 capped a 54-hole score of 224. Benedikt Thalmayr's 226 was finished off by a 75 on Sunday and tied him for 45th in the tournament.
 
Patricio Freundt-Thurne's 234 tied him for 59th, while Daniel Pico tied for 62nd with a 233 that was finished by a 79 in the final round. Maximo Portais also competed as an individual for JSU and tied for 64th with a 234.
 
The Gamecocks' next event will be the Kennesaw State Pinetree Invitational at the Pinetree Country Club from Oct. 23-24.
